Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Manager,

I am writing this letter to inform you about the problem which i face from last 10 days in your appartment. I am living in this apartment since 2 years and this is the first time i am facing such kind of issue.

Firstly, I did not have any issue since i moved here back in 2024. Since last 10 days, I have been gone through an issue with water. On September 17, 2026 i went for a bath in morning and because of cool weather outside, i generaly take bath with warm water. I started a shower and after a few minutes water became cold. I thought it was small issue and it was not happening after that but the very next day the issue remained same and also false smell came from water as well.

I would recommend there should be some cleaning needed in tank of water. Due to uncleaned tank and dirty pipes the isssue arrise. It is an serious issue because i talked with my neighbour as well and they said same that they are facing the same issue since very long time. It could cause some skin disease like rashes, redness and itching. I would suggest to hire a cleaner and plumber to do some cleaning of tank and pipes.

Moreover, property manager also want to visit my flat as soon as possible and see the issue. there are some other problem i am facing in my apartment as well like slow water force in all taps. Manager should need to visit and make some maintainance report and solve all this issue.

Thank you for your attention to this matter and i am looking forward to hear from you

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The candidate successfully covers all three bullet points required by the task prompt. First, the problem is described clearly, explaining the issue with the warm water and the strange smell. Second, the writer suggests what should be done about it by recommending a tank cleaning and the hiring of a plumber. Third, the building manager is asked to visit the apartment to inspect the problem. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint letter to a building manager, and ideas are extended with relevant details regarding neighbours and potential health risks. Although there are some minor mechanical issues and a slight confusion in pronouns in the final paragraph, all parts of the task are well addressed, earning a solid band score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter is organised into clear paragraphs with a logical progression of ideas, moving from the introduction of the issue to detailed descriptions, proposed solutions, and finally a request for a visit. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'Firstly' and 'Moreover', though referencing is occasionally faulty, particularly in the final paragraph where the writer states 'property manager also want to visit my flat' instead of maintaining the direct address to the manager. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, but the overall flow can feel slightly mechanical due to repetitive sentence starters. Nevertheless, the organisation is clear enough to ensure the reader can easily follow the sequence of events and requests.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common lexical items such as 'maintainance report' and 'false smell' (though 'unusual' or 'strange' would be more natural). There are noticeable lexical errors, such as 'appartment' (spelling), 'issue arrise' (grammatical form of the verb), and 'water force' (instead of 'water pressure'). While these errors do not impede communication, they reflect a limited precision in word choice and collocation. The range is sufficient to convey the necessary details about the apartment repairs, but word forms require closer attention.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional or relative clauses ('because of cool weather outside, i generaly take bath with warm water' and 'I talked with my neighbour as well and they said same that they are facing the same issue'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense usage ('which i face from last 10 days', 'I have been gone through'), missing articles ('tank of water', 'It is an serious issue'), and subject-verb agreement errors ('there are some other problem'). Punctuation and capitalisation errors also occur frequently ('i', 'appartment'). These errors require some effort to decode at times, though meaning remains generally clear.
