Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Building Manager,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter on behalf of every building member to express my concerns about damaged condition of the building's main gate. I would provide you with a better solution for this problem.
To begin with, I have been living in this building since last two years. Inhabitants of this building are caring and friendly. We are a family now.
Unfortunately, due to the extreme weather conditions from last few months, the main gate of the building is completely rusted now. It becomes problematic to unlock it once it is locked. However, I believe if it is scratched to make it even smoother and re-painted with two coats will be helpful to curtail this issue. We all are ready to financially contribute in that.
Moreover, your visit to examine the actual problem would be highly appreciated.
To conclude, an immediate repairing of the main gate is required and I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Madiha

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Madiha covers all the bullet points effectively. She describes the problem clearly by explaining that the main gate is completely rusted due to extreme weather. She also provides a practical solution by suggesting that it be scratched, smoothed, and re-painted, while noting that residents are willing to contribute financially. Furthermore, she invites the building manager to visit the apartment to examine the problem firsthand. The tone is polite and appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. The purpose of the letter is maintained throughout, and the ideas are well-supported, earning this section a solid band 7.0 score according to the criteria.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter follows a clear logical organization with appropriate paragraphing. Madiha uses transitional markers and cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Unfortunately', 'However', 'Moreover', and 'To conclude' to guide the reader through the letter. While some of these linking phrases feel slightly mechanical or formulaic, the overall progression of ideas is easy to follow. Paragraphs are used sufficiently to separate the greeting, introduction, description, solution, invitation, and sign-off. Referencing is mostly clear, and the overall arrangement meets the requirements for a band 6.5, leaning towards a well-structured format.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'extreme weather conditions', 'problematic', 'financially contribute', and 'highly appreciated'. There are some minor lexical inaccuracies, such as 'damaged condition of the building's main gate' (missing article) and 'from last few months' instead of 'for the last few months'. However, these errors do not impede communication. She also attempts some less common vocabulary like 'curtail this issue'. This performance aligns well with the descriptors for a band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
Madiha uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional ideas ('if it is scratched... will be helpful') and subordinate clauses. There are a few grammatical errors throughout the text, including prepositional and article mistakes like 'since last two years' instead of 'for the last two years' and 'damaged condition' without a determiner. Additionally, the phrase 'due to the extreme weather conditions from last few months' contains a preposition error. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear, and communication is never impeded. The majority of simple sentences are accurate, supporting a band 6.0 score.
