Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Raman Sharma,

I hope you are doing well.

I am writing this letter to get your attention towards the problem of hot water in your apartment.

As you know, I am one of the tenants of your Greenbook apartment. I am living in there for last five years. There are very less circumstances when I face any problems. But this time my problem is a major one. Actually, the thing is that I am not getting hot water from last month.

I have asked you a couple of times. But there is no response from your side. Before the weather was not that cold as it is getting now. As I am working in the early mornings, at that time the water is very cold. So, you should take immediate and appropriate steps about it.

If you have some time, then can you please come and check the filters of water heating system. Not only this, please also check anything else that needs to be inspected for this issue

I hope you will resolve this issue as soon

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student successfully covers all three bullet points required by the task instructions. The problem is clearly described, as the writer states that they have not had hot water for the last month. The letter also addresses what should be done by suggesting that the manager 'should take immediate and appropriate steps about it' and inspecting the filters of the water heating system. Finally, the third bullet point is fulfilled by asking the manager to visit the apartment to check the issue. The tone is appropriately formal for a letter to a building manager, and the purpose is clearly communicated throughout. The response is fully relevant to the prompt and meets all core requirements of General Training Task 1, earning a solid Band 6.5 rating.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a clear overall progression, starting with a polite greeting and statement of purpose, moving into the description of the problem, and concluding with a call to action. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct ideas, though some paragraphs are quite short, such as 'I hope you are doing well.' Cohesive devices are used, but they can be slightly mechanical or repetitive, as seen in the transition 'Actually, the thing is that...'. Referencing is generally clear, although the abrupt ending ('I hope you will resolve this issue as soon') leaves the final sentence incomplete, slightly disrupting the overall cohesion. Despite these minor flaws, the logical flow is easy to follow, supporting a Band 6.0 score.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating everyday issues related to property management. Phrases such as 'tenants', 'appropriate steps', and 'inspected' show an acceptable level of lexical control. However, there are noticeable limitations and occasional word-choice errors, such as 'get your attention towards' instead of 'draw your attention to', and 'There are very less circumstances' instead of 'There are very few occasions'. Spelling is generally accurate, but some lexical choices lack precision or idiomatic naturalness. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message clearly, these inaccuracies prevent the response from reaching a higher band, placing it comfortably at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'As you know, I am one of the tenants...' and 'If you have some time, then can you please come...'. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing patterns throughout the text. Examples include 'I am living in there for last five years' (incorrect preposition and tense usage; should be 'have been living there for the last five years'), 'Before the weather was not that cold' (unnatural word order), and an incomplete final sentence. While these errors occur regularly, they do not severely impede communication, as the reader can still fully understand the intended meaning. This balance of mixed structures and frequent minor errors aligns well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.
