Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Building Manager,

I am writing this letter to inform you about a problem in my apartment that needs to be repaired as soon as possible. I have been experiencing a serious issue with music from the neighbourhood late at night.

The problem becomes worse because the music is so loud that I can hear it clearly in my bedroom. It has been difficult for me to sleep and concentrate on my daily activities. I tried to tolerate this situation, but the problem has continued and is becoming more disturbing.

I believe that you should visit the neighbour's house and remind them about the building's rules regarding noise. If possible, you can ask them to reduce the volume of the music, especially at night.

I would be truly grateful if you could visit my apartment in the evening to hear the noise of the music and understand for yourself how serious the problem is.

Thank you so much for your consideration. I hope you will do something to overcome my issue.

Yours faithfully,

Kevin Gohil

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You successfully covered all parts of the prompt in your letter. You described the problem clearly by explaining that loud music from the neighbourhood late at night is disrupting your sleep and concentration. You also suggested what should be done about it by asking the building manager to visit the neighbour and remind them of the building rules regarding noise. Finally, you successfully asked the manager to visit your apartment in the evening to hear the issue firsthand. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager, and the purpose of the communication is entirely clear throughout. The ideas are well-developed and fulfil all bullet points of the task instructions effectively, earning a solid band score for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter has a clear overall progression and logical organisation. You use standard and appropriate paragraphing, dividing your introduction, body paragraphs addressing the problem and solutions, and your concluding sign-off cleanly. Cohesive devices are handled adequately, for example, using 'The problem becomes worse because...' and 'I would be truly grateful if you could...'. However, referencing and transitions are somewhat straightforward and occasionally mechanical, which keeps this criterion at the band 7 level. Overall, the message flows well from one point to the next, making the letter easy and logical to follow for the reader.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate and mostly natural range of vocabulary suitable for a formal complaint letter, such as 'experiencing a serious issue', 'tolerate this situation', and 'truly grateful'. There are attempts at less common vocabulary phrases like 'concentrate on my daily activities' and 'building manager'. However, the vocabulary is at times slightly basic or repetitive, and there are some minor unnatural collocations, such as referring to a neighbourhood flat as 'the neighbour's house' in an apartment building context. Despite this, your lexical resource is sufficient to convey your precise meaning without any strain or impedance to communication, deserving a competent band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0

You demonstrate good control of grammar and punctuation throughout the letter. You have used a variety of complex structures successfully, such as 'I am writing this letter to inform you about a problem in my apartment that needs to be repaired...' and 'I would be truly grateful if you could visit my apartment in the evening...'. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is accurate. There are only very occasional minor awkwardisms, but these do not impede communication or reduce clarity. Your grammatical accuracy is strong, reflecting a high level of control over both simple and complex sentence forms.
