Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Gabriel,

I'm writing this letter to inform you about the plumbing issue which I'm facing since 2 months in my apartment.

Water pipe and bathing shower is leaking water continuously in the bathroom. First I thought it might stop on its own. But it did not stop. This leakage issue is making a mess in washroom and sometimes I was about to slip due to wet floor. Furthermore, water is wasted due to continuous leakage causing burden on electrical pump motor in our building.

In order to resolve the issue, I advise you to coordinate with plumber service company to repair the leakage. Also, I suggest that regular maintenance of all utility services to be done by maintenance company so that any repairs are completed on time and does not affect the daily life of people living in apartments.

I strongly ask you to visit the building to see the problem as it has been in the discussion with you and you failed to solve the problem.

Yours Sincerely

Shahbaaz

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response fully covers all parts of the task prompt in a clear and appropriate tone for a semi-formal letter. First, you successfully describe the plumbing issue, detailing the leaking water pipe and shower in the bathroom. Second, you state what you think should be done about it by advising the manager to coordinate with a plumbing service and implement regular maintenance. Finally, you explicitly ask the building manager to visit your apartment to see the problem firsthand. The purpose of the letter is clear throughout, and the tone remains appropriately direct and firm. The ideas are well-developed and all three bullet points from the task prompt are thoroughly addressed, meeting the criteria for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You begin with an appropriate salutation and a clear statement of purpose, followed by logical paragraphs dedicated to the problem, your proposed solutions, and a firm call to action. Cohesive devices such as 'First', 'Furthermore', and 'In order to resolve the issue' are used effectively to connect ideas and guide the reader. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the distinct points of the letter. Although some transitions are slightly formulaic, the overall structure and cohesion support clear communication, fully satisfying the requirements of a Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your lexical resource is adequate for the task, demonstrating a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate clearly and with some precision. You successfully use less common items and topic-specific vocabulary such as 'plumbing issue', 'continuous leakage', 'utility services', and 'maintenance company'. However, there are occasional minor inaccuracies in word choice or phrasing, such as 'facing since 2 months' (should be 'for 2 months') and 'coincide with plumber service company' (better phrased as 'hire a plumbing service'). Despite these occasional limitations, the vocabulary is varied enough to convey your message accurately without impeding the reader's understanding, earning a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an adequate control of grammar. You successfully incorporate complex structures, such as 'In order to resolve the issue, I advise you to coordinate with plumber service company to repair the leakage.' However, there are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, including the tense usage in 'which I'm facing since 2 months' (present perfect continuous with 'for' is required), the missing article in 'with plumber service', and the passive construction 'to be done'. While these errors persist, they rarely impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout. This balance of structures and minor errors aligns with a Band 6.0.
