Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Max,

I am writing this regarding the apartment where I have been living for the last five years. There are some problems in the apartment which needs your immediate attention.

I would like to mention about the repairs such as water blockage in the bathroom tub, paints on the walls is coming out, and there is always problem with the air conditioning during the summers. These issues will not be resolved without your facilitation so please make a visit as quickly you can.

For the water blockage, I think plumber is required because some other apartments also have same issue and air conditioning problem needs electrician.

Summers are coming so it will be hard for us to stay here during the hot days.

Moreover, I am thinking to hire painters for the wall painting because I would like to change the colour of the walls.

I am usually available during the weekends, please visit our apartment and have a look so that these repairs should be done immediately. If it is possible please give me some contact numbers of the painters to discuss about the cost and when they are available to start.

Thanks for your time and consideration, I hope these issues will be resolved as soon as possible.

Yours sincerely,

David

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all the required bullet points of the prompt. David describes multiple apartment problems, including a water blockage in the bathtub, peeling wall paint, and recurring air conditioning issues during the summer. He also suggests specific solutions, such as hiring a plumber, an electrician, and painters. Furthermore, he asks the building manager to visit his apartment over the weekend to inspect the issues and discuss cost details. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a building manager. The purpose is clear throughout the response, and all parts of the task are adequately addressed, earning a solid band score for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter exhibits a clear overall progression and logical organisation. David uses paragraphing effectively to separate the greeting, the description of problems, the proposed solutions, the visit request, and the sign-off. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Moreover' and 'For the water blockage', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure. Referencing is mostly clear, ensuring that the reader can easily follow the sequence of ideas and requests. Overall, cohesion is managed well, keeping the communication smooth despite minor structural limitations.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, using terms such as 'facilitation', 'air conditioning', and 'appointment'. However, there are some word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'paints on the walls is coming out' instead of 'paint is peeling off' and 'mention about' instead of simply 'mention'. While less common vocabulary is attempted, it occasionally lacks precision. Nevertheless, the lexical range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

David demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses like 'where I have been living for the last five years' and 'so it will be hard for us to stay here'. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'some problems... which needs' instead of 'need', and missing articles such as 'I think plumber is required'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while these errors persist, they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to easily understand the message.
