Dear _________,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mr. Patel,

I am writing to lodge a formal complaint regarding the air conditioner in my unit (unit no: 402) has stopped working for the last five days.

The major problem I have been facing is due to extreme heat in the summer, my units indoor temperature is close to 40 degree celcius. Pratically, it is impossible to work and complete basic household activities. The unreliability of the cooling system has caused significant delays to my work, as I work from home.

In addition, I would request an urgent visit by the technician. Upon talking with my my neighbour Mr. Desai, who lives in 40, I realised that the AC is working perfectly for them. The technician would be able to find the problem, as I tried turning it on and off multiple times in recent days. Our building has a meeting room, if you could reserve it for me during my working hours, that would be very helpful.

It could be very helpful if you could visit my apartment anytime tomorrow. The celing fans in my unit are quite old and slow too. I had to buy a portable cooler yesterday, so I could sleep peacefully at night. Should you require more details or information, I would be happy to assist you further.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Neel Desai

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The candidate has successfully covered all bullet points outlined in the task instructions. The problem is clearly described, stating that the air conditioner has not been working for five days and temperatures are reaching 40 degrees Celsius. Suggestions are made regarding what should be done, including sending a technician and reserving a meeting room. Additionally, the writer asks the manager to visit the apartment tomorrow. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. Ideas are relevant and fully developed, satisfying the requirements for a high band score under Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0

The letter is logically organised with clear paragraphing, each addressing a distinct aspect of the communication. The opening paragraph introduces the purpose of the letter, followed by details of the problem and its impact, then actionable requests, and a polite sign-off. Cohesive devices are used appropriately, such as 'In addition' and 'Upon talking with'. Referencing throughout the text is clear and the progression of ideas is smooth, ensuring the reader follows the narrative without confusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal complaint letter, such as 'lodge a formal complaint', 'extreme heat', and 'significant delays'. However, there are some minor lexical slips and spelling errors, such as 'celcius' instead of 'Celsius' and 'Pratically' instead of 'Practically'. Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is adequate to convey the message clearly and effectively, reflecting the descriptors for Band 7.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional structures like 'Should you require more details or information...'. There are, however, some noticeable grammatical errors, notably in the first sentence ('regarding the air conditioner in my unit (unit no: 402) has stopped working'), which contains a redundancy in clause structure. Punctuation and control are generally good, but the grammatical slips prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
