Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, satisfying the requirements for describing the problems, suggesting a solution, and asking the building manager to visit the apartment. The student clearly outlines two distinct issues—the faulty front door lock and the leaking shower—and provides relevant reasons, noting that parents are arriving soon. Furthermore, the letter appropriately requests a visit next week. While all bullet points are covered and the purpose of the letter is evident, certain ideas could have been extended more fully to reach a higher level. For instance, the explanation of the lock issue lacks specific detail about when it started or how it affects daily security beyond leaving it unlocked. Nevertheless, the tone is appropriate for a request to a building manager, ensuring that the core communicative purpose of the task is successfully met throughout the letter.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a logical flow from describing the maintenance issues to proposing solutions and requesting a visit. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, starting with an introduction, followed by the description of problems in the body paragraph, and concluding with the visit request and sign-off. However, cohesion within sentences is sometimes mechanical or faulty, such as the abrupt transition between sentences or referencing issues like 'help me with as soon as possible' missing a direct object. While the use of cohesive markers like 'Secondly' helps to structure the complaints, the overall linking of ideas occasionally feels disjointed. To progress further, the writer needs to ensure smoother transitions between clauses and more precise referencing to guide the reader effortlessly through the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, providing a sufficient range to describe basic household problems such as 'door lock', 'water leakage', and 'noise'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but this is accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word form. For instance, 'apartement' and 'appericate' contain spelling mistakes, while 'shawer' is misspelled. In terms of word choice and collocation, phrases such as 'from a long time' instead of 'for a long time', 'leave unclocked' instead of 'unlocked', and 'top hear it' instead of 'to hear it' demonstrate recurring inaccuracies. Although these errors do not severely impede communication and the reader can easily grasp the intended meaning, the presence of these lexical slips restricts the score to an adequate level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The letter displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use varied structures such as conditional and subordinate clauses. However, there are noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing throughout the text. Issues include prepositional and article omissions, such as 'is front door lock' instead of 'is the front door lock', and tense/aspect errors like 'Water always keep dripping' instead of 'Water keeps dripping'. Punctuation and sentence boundary errors also occur, notably sentence fragments such as 'Because my parents are coming to stay with me for one week,' which incorrectly separates a dependent clause. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the response from achieving a higher band, showing that better control over grammatical structures and punctuation is needed.
