Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the task only partially. It is important to note that the length requirement is not met, as the text contains 144 words, which falls short of the 150-word minimum. While all three bullet points from the prompt are touched upon—describing the flooring, shelves, and window ceiling, suggesting repairs, and asking the building manager to visit—the ideas are presented in a very limited, disjointed list format and remain under-developed. For instance, the description of the problems lacks specific detail about when they started or the full extent of the damage. To move to a higher level, the response would need to fully develop all parts of the task with extended details, maintain an appropriate formal tone suitable for a letter to a building manager, and successfully meet the minimum word count requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The text shows some organisation, but there is no clear overall progression or logical structure throughout the letter. Instead of using proper paragraphing and cohesive devices, the student relies on an unnatural numbered list format for the problems (1. Flooring 2. Broken shelves 3. Water leakage). Cohesive devices are largely absent, inadequate, or inaccurate, making the flow abrupt and disjointed. For example, transitions between sentences like 'And last one is water leakage' are mechanical and informal. Referencing is also not always clear, and the overall arrangement lacks cohesion. To achieve a higher band, the writer must organise information into logically connected paragraphs, use a wider range of appropriate cohesive devices to link ideas smoothly, and ensure a clear progression of thought from stating the problems to requesting a visit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey the basic message. The student attempts some vocabulary related to housing and maintenance, such as 'water leakage', 'mold controller spray', and 'consideration', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling. Examples include 'foots' instead of feet, 'bear foot' instead of barefoot, 'shelve' instead of shelves, 'kept' instead of put, and 'repary' instead of repair. There are also spelling errors such as 'eariler' and 'iblook', alongside inappropriate phrasing like 'facing in our unit'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve lexical resource, the writer needs to expand their vocabulary range, use correct word forms and collocations, and carefully check their spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences that are often faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and sentence construction that cause difficulty for the reader. Noticeable issues include missing articles ('express my problem', 'on windows celling'), incorrect prepositions ('facing in our unit', 'on near'), run-on sentences with comma splices ('floor is damaged badly can't clean properly even it is hurting'), and incorrect verb forms and tenses ('doe not control', 'iblook forward to hearing you'). Complex structures are rarely attempted and, when used, are inaccurate. To reach a higher band, the writer must incorporate a mix of accurate simple and complex sentence structures, improve control over verb tenses and agreement, and ensure correct punctuation and capitalization throughout.
