Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Manager,

I hope you are doing well, I am writing this letter to inform you about the issue we are facing right now in our apartment.

Since the last few days , we weren't able to sleep properly due to the biting. First, we thought that it was a mosquito bite, we tried to close our windows and doors before the sunset. Lately, we realise that it wasn't mosquito but a morely like a bedbug infestation. I truely believe that it has been spread throughout the building, as I heard other neighbour is facing the same issue.

I would really appreciate if you can come to our apartment and look into this matter . Also I would suggest to do the inspection of the whole building, as if it's overall in whole building then looking into one apartment wouldn't solve the problem. Also I would suggest to arrange a meeting and guidelines should be provided to residents on precautions that need to taken.

Thanks for your time and consideration and I will be looking forward to hearing from you.

Best Regards,

Rutvi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You successfully address all parts of the task by clearly describing the problem of the bedbug infestation, suggesting appropriate actions such as inspecting the entire building and providing resident guidelines, and asking the manager to visit your apartment. Your purpose is immediately clear, and your position is maintained throughout the letter. The ideas are generally well-extended, such as when you explain why inspecting only a single apartment would be insufficient. To achieve a higher level, some of these ideas could be developed with even greater depth and precision, ensuring that the tone remains consistently formal and polished across all points raised.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. You effectively group your thoughts into logical paragraphs, moving smoothly from the greeting and introduction of the issue into the details of the infestation, followed by your recommendations and visit request, and concluding appropriately. You use basic cohesive devices adequately to connect your ideas, such as 'First' and 'Also'. However, cohesion can sometimes feel slightly mechanical due to repetitive sentence openers. To reach the next level, you could use a wider variety of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that referencing between sentences is tighter and less reliant on simple conjunctions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and specific terms such as 'infestation', 'precautions', and 'inspection'. However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'morely like a bedbug infestation' instead of 'more like a bedbug infestation', and 'truely' instead of 'truly'. Additionally, phrases like 'other neighbour' contain minor singular/plural slips. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a vocabulary control that is still developing. To improve, you should focus on precision in word choice, natural collocations, and careful spelling checks.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You show a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over your writing structure. There are several error-free sentences, such as your opening statement and your request for a visit. However, you make some errors in grammar and punctuation, including comma splices and run-on structures like 'I hope you are doing well, I am writing...', missing articles or pluralization issues in 'as I heard other neighbour is facing', and tense inconsistencies such as 'we weren't able to sleep' combined with 'Lately, we realise'. While these errors rarely impede communication, they prevent you from achieving a higher band. Expanding your range of error-free complex structures and refining your punctuation will strengthen this area.
