Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Manager,
I am writing to report an issue with the apartment that I am living in.
I am Karthik Yedukondala, working as an IT professional. I am staying in your building in flat number 14(A). Recently, I am having many troubles in my flat like water shortage due to some pipeline issue, electricity, wall paints, and plumbing issues. However, water is my major problem to stay in my home. In addition, I am not able to cook, clean, and bath. It is a huge discomfort for me.
I think the water problem can be resolved by the building manager, because I am not authorized to bring a plumber on my own. And I hope this issue can be fixed in one or two days.
I would appreciate it if you could visit my apartment to view the problem in-person. Furthermore, It would help me to be more transparent about the issues I mentioned above if you have a quick peak on those.
Thanks for your time and consideration. I hope this issue will be resolved as soon as possible.
Sincerely,
Karthik Yedukondala

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by describing the problems, suggesting a solution, and asking the building manager to visit the apartment. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a building manager. However, some parts are more fully developed than others. While the description of the water shortage and its impact is clear, the mention of other issues like 'electricity, wall paints, and plumbing issues' is somewhat brief and under-developed. To reach a higher level, all listed problems should be given equal elaboration, ensuring that the connection between the various maintenance faults and the suggested actions is fully explored.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning and ending. Information is grouped logically into paragraphs, starting with the introduction, followed by the problems, the proposed solution, and the request for a visit. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or slightly faulty, such as the transition 'However, water is my major problem to stay in my home,' which feels a bit abrupt. Referencing is generally clear, but paragraphing could be used more flexibly to separate the diverse maintenance issues from the primary water crisis, improving the overall logical progression of the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'IT professional' and 'in-person.' There are, however, some word choice and collocation inaccuracies that prevent a higher score. For instance, writing 'Recently, I am having many troubles' instead of a present perfect structure, and using the phrase 'quick peak' (which is a spelling error for peek) demonstrate limitations in lexical control. Despite these minor errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main points clearly without impeding the reader's understanding.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I would appreciate it if you could visit my apartment to view the problem in-person.' There are some errors in grammar and tense usage, notably 'Recently, I am having many troubles' instead of 'I have been having,' and the prepositional phrasing in 'transparent about the issues.' Punctuation is generally handled well, and the errors present are not overly frequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the message easily. Greater control over verb tenses and complex structures would elevate the grammatical score.
