Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to complain about the unstable internet connection in our building. As, it has been few days since it started showing connectivity errors specially during daytime, and I also checked the ethernet cable ports to make sure it's not the wiring issue. Actually, I have upcoming presentation week of my mid-term semester, and it would be necessary to have a stable connection during video call meeting.

In my opinion, the router box seems having the issue and can be replaced, because as far I remember during the maintenance check, the technician observed few damages on the box due to weather conditions. Although it does work sometime as normal, it would be much helpful if you come into the building to arrange the solution.

I would really appericiate your attention on this matter and look forward to hear from you soon. Thank you!

Kind regards,

Robin

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, earning a solid rating. You cover the three bullet points well by describing the unstable internet connection, explaining your belief that the router box is damaged and needs replacement, and explicitly asking the building manager to visit the apartment to see the problem. Your position is clear throughout, and your reasons are extended and supported, particularly with your explanation of the upcoming presentation week and the technician's prior observations. To reach a higher level, you could further extend your ideas by providing more detailed background on how long the intermittent outages have lasted or offering specific times for the visit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter has a coherent overall arrangement and clear paragraphing, moving logically from the problem description to your proposed solution and the request for a visit, which displays the characteristics required for this band level and partially reaches towards higher organization. You use basic cohesive devices appropriately, such as 'In my opinion' and 'Although it does work sometime'. However, cohesion is occasionally a bit mechanical, and referencing is not always completely clear, such as the dangling transition 'As, it has been few days', which disrupts the natural flow between clauses. To improve further, you should work on smoother transitions and more varied cohesive links to connect your ideas more seamlessly.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and phrases such as 'connectivity errors', 'ethernet cable ports', and 'maintenance check'. Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your message clearly, but there are some word-choice and spelling errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'appericiate' instead of 'appreciate' and awkward phrasings like 'router box seems having the issue'. To elevate your lexical resource, you should focus on more precise word choices, accurate collocations, and careful proofreading to eliminate minor spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

Your writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating your ability to construct varied sentences such as 'Although it does work sometime as normal, it would be much helpful if you come into the building to arrange the solution.' However, there are some errors in grammar and punctuation that appear throughout the text, including article omissions ('few days', 'wiring issue'), incorrect punctuation ('As, it has been'), and preposition usage ('look forward to hear'). While these errors rarely impede communication, they reflect the typical pattern of this band level where grammatical control is inconsistent, particularly when attempting more complex structures.
