IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have a problem in your apartment that needs repairs.

Write a letter to the building manager. In your letter
• describe the problem.
• say what you think should be done about it.
• ask the building manager to visit your apartment to see the problem.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear _________,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mr. Smith,

I am writing this letter to bring your attention towards the maintainance work that needs to be done in the apartment 6-B.

Firstly, all the pipe in the kitchen sink is leaking and water continuously dripping from it. Because of the moisture, the wooden shelve next to it is deteriorating. Secondly, the shower in the washroom is also broken. The valve holding its outer knob got detached by the rust, and it needs immediate replacement.

As far as the repairing work is concerned, both pipe and shower needs replacement. If you choose to repair the existing one, I am unsure about its longetivity as the condition of shower and pipe is getting worse day by day.

To estimate the damage, you are welcome to visit the apartment this weekend. I will be available from 10am to 2pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

I hope you will give my request careful consideration. I look forward to hearing back from you.

Best Regards,

Fazal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The letter covers all three requirements clearly: you describe the leaking kitchen pipe and damaged shelf, explain that the shower is also broken, recommend replacing both fixtures, and invite the manager to inspect the apartment at a specific time. The practical details about your availability make the request easy to act on, while the explanation that the damage is worsening supports your proposed solution. The purpose and tone remain clear throughout, and the ideas are developed well for this kind of letter. To make the response even more complete, you could briefly state how long the problems have been occurring or mention the inconvenience they cause, but these are minor additions rather than gaps in the task response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The information follows a clear, useful sequence: the opening states the purpose, the next paragraph describes the two faults, and later paragraphs propose a solution and arrange a visit. Linking phrases such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “As far as the repairing work is concerned” help signal the progression, and the closing is appropriate. Paragraphing also separates the main functions of the letter effectively. Some transitions feel slightly formulaic, however, and the shift from describing the faults to recommending replacement could be smoother. You could connect these points more directly—for example, explain that the worsening leaks and rust are why replacement is preferable—while retaining the clear paragraph structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a maintenance request, including “deteriorating,” “detached,” “replacement,” and “estimate the damage.” These choices communicate the problems and proposed action clearly, and the tone is appropriately formal. Some word choices and collocations are less natural, which limits the precision and flexibility of the vocabulary: “bring your attention towards” would more naturally be “bring to your attention,” and “the valve holding its outer knob got detached by the rust” is awkwardly phrased. There are also spelling errors in “maintainance” and “longetivity.” Review common collocations and check spelling carefully; more natural phrasing would make the letter sound more fluent and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The letter includes a useful mix of sentence forms, including complex clauses such as “Because of the moisture, the wooden shelve next to it is deteriorating” and “If you choose to repair the existing one, I am unsure about its longetivity.” Many sentences are clear and grammatically controlled, and punctuation generally supports the meaning. A few errors remain in agreement and number: “all the pipe … is leaking” should be “all the pipes … are leaking,” and “both pipe and shower needs replacement” should be “both the pipe and the shower need replacement.” The sentence about the valve is also structurally awkward. Check subject–verb agreement and use clear clause structures when describing how parts have become damaged.
