Student answer (Band 5.5)
Dear sir,
I am writing this letter to request to visit in my appartment to see the problem of water.
Actually , we faced this problem from few days. For example, if we used the hot watere for maximum 30 minutes thwn it turns into cold automatically. I know if we used more hot water then we have to wait for hot water. But 30 minutes is not sufficient for us. Because me and my husband both used the washroom in the early morning and also make food in the morning for work.
we want that could you please come in our appartmemt and find a sollution of this problem.
kind Regards,
Gagandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the hot-water problem and explain its effect on your household: after about 30 minutes, the water becomes cold, and both you and your husband need the bathroom in the morning. You also ask the manager to visit and find a solution, so the main purpose is clear. However, the request about what should be done is brief, and the problem and its impact are not developed enough to fully address the task. The response is also 36 words below the required minimum, which limits the detail you can provide. Add a specific repair request, such as checking the water heater, and explain when the manager could visit.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter follows a generally understandable order: you state your purpose, describe the hot-water issue, explain why it affects your household, and ask for a visit. This gives the reader a coherent overall arrangement. However, the ideas are compressed into one main block, and the transition from the problem to its impact is abrupt, particularly with “Because me and my husband both used the washroom…” A clearer paragraph break after the description would help distinguish the problem from your request. Use linking phrases such as “As a result” to show the connection between the limited hot-water supply and your morning routine, and close with a more complete sign-off.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the central issue, using relevant terms such as “hot water,” “cold,” “washroom,” and “solution.” However, the range is limited, and several spelling and word-choice errors make the letter less clear or less natural, including “appartment,” “watere,” “thwn,” and “sollution.” The phrase “request to visit in my appartment” is also not an appropriate way to express that you want the manager to visit. Aim for precise, natural language such as “inspect my apartment” and “the hot-water supply.” Proofreading spelling and choosing standard collocations would make your message easier to read and more suitable for a formal letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You communicate the basic message, but the range of sentence structures is limited and attempts at longer sentences are often faulty. For example, “I am writing this letter to request to visit in my appartment” has an unclear grammatical pattern, while “Because me and my husband both used the washroom…” is an incomplete sentence. There are also tense and conditional problems in “if we used the hot water … then it turns into cold,” and the final request, “we want that could you please come,” is not grammatically formed. Practise complete sentences and polite request structures, such as “Could you please visit my apartment to inspect the problem?” Check tense consistency when describing a recurring issue.
