Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I'm writing this letter to report maintenance issue in my apartment, 32M which urgently needs to be resolved.
Over the past week, a severe leakage has been developed underneath the washroom sink area. Water is constantly dripping from the main drainage pipe area which is causing bad odor. Despite placing the bucket, it fills rapidly. It is damaging the cabinet and floor underneath the sink area. I believe whole drainage pipe needs to be replaced by a good plumber. Additionally, kindly repair the wooden cabinet or replace it.
Secondly summer season is almost here & half of the fans and lights are not working. Kindly resolve this issue too.
I request you to visit my apartment this week to see the damage by yourself. You can visit apartment anytime after 2:00pm in the afternoon.
I look forward for your response & will be greatful
Your sincerely,
Laraib Yaseen

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three requested points: you describe the leaking pipe and resulting damage, suggest replacing the pipe and repairing or replacing the cabinet, and ask the manager to visit at a suitable time. The additional issue with the fans and lights is also relevant. The main ideas are clear, but some are less fully developed: for example, you do not explain how many fixtures are affected or whether the electrical problem is connected to the leak. The proposed repairs are practical, though you could make the request more specific by asking the manager to arrange an inspection and a qualified plumber. Overall, the letter fulfils its purpose, with some details needing clearer development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The information follows a generally sensible order: you introduce the maintenance concern, describe the leak and its effects, mention another repair issue, and finish with a visit request. Paragraphing helps distinguish the main problems from the closing request. However, the transition “Secondly” makes the fans and lights sound like a separate numbered point, while the relationship between this issue and the main repair request is not explained. Some linking is also mechanical, and the long opening paragraph contains several different details. Use clearer paragraph breaks and more natural transitions, and ensure references such as “this issue” clearly identify which repair you mean. The overall arrangement is coherent, although cohesion is not consistently smooth.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to explain the maintenance problems, including “leakage,” “drainage pipe,” “damaging,” and “replace,” and the reader can understand the practical consequences. There are also some inaccurate or unnatural choices: “a severe leakage has been developed” is not idiomatic, and “bad odor” is less precise than describing an unpleasant smell from the leak. “Greatful” is misspelled, and “look forward for” reflects an incorrect phrase choice. These slips do not prevent understanding, but they limit the accuracy and naturalness of the vocabulary. Aim for precise collocations and check spelling, especially in the closing and in descriptions of damage.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The letter includes both simple statements and more developed structures, such as “Despite placing the bucket, it fills rapidly” and “which is causing bad odor.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. For example, “report maintenance issue” needs an article, and “a severe leakage has been developed” uses an unsuitable verb construction. The sentence beginning “Secondly summer season…” also needs punctuation after the introductory word and a clearer grammatical structure. In the closing, “I look forward for my response” would require a different preposition and subject construction. Review articles, verb forms, and punctuation around introductory phrases to make the sentences more consistently accurate.
