Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr Faz,

The objective of writing this letter is to address multiple problems in the house. I am resident of apartment number 34 in your building.

Firstly, the window of the master bedroom is cracked and could shatter at any moment. Which is a serious hazard. Moreover, I am facing leakage from the East side wall. I required the neighbor if have any broke pipe or anything but he could find it. Moreover, kitchen receptacle and light are not working as well I tried to reset the GFCI receptacle but it tripped again, needs to troubleshoot.

Please contact a professional who can fix the problem mentioned above. I would like to request you to look at the issue in the apartment. Kindly schedule it on any weekend or give me a call when you are available.

I hope you will look into it and find solution as soon as possible.

Yours Faithfuly

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you describe the cracked bedroom window, wall leakage, and faulty kitchen receptacle and light; suggest contacting a professional; and ask the manager to inspect the apartment and arrange a visit. The safety risk of the window is clear, and the weekend/call request gives a practical way to organise access. Some details are less fully developed: the source or effects of the leak are uncertain, and the proposed repair is general rather than specifying what you would like the manager to arrange. A little more explanation of the problems and a direct request for an inspection and repairs would make the response more complete and developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a recognisable progression from introducing the purpose, to listing the problems, to requesting action and closing politely. Paragraph breaks help separate these stages, and markers such as “Firstly” and “Moreover” guide the reader through the list. However, the repeated “Moreover” makes the linking somewhat mechanical, while the long problem paragraph combines several issues without clear separation. The sentence fragment “Which is a serious hazard” also interrupts the flow, and the reference in “he could find it” is unclear. Grouping each problem more distinctly and using clearer links between the requested actions would make the organisation smoother and more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a repair request, including “cracked,” “shatter,” “leakage,” “GFCI receptacle,” and “professional.” These choices communicate the main issues, and the technical term adds useful specificity. Some expressions are awkward or imprecise, such as “address multiple problems in the house” and “I required the neighbor if have any broke pipe”; these make parts of the message harder to interpret. “Needs to troubleshoot” is also not a natural way to describe the repair required. Aim for accurate collocations and more precise wording, while retaining the useful specific vocabulary you already use.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, for example, “I would like to request you to look at the issue in the apartment” and the sentence explaining that the receptacle tripped again. The overall meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. “I am resident” needs an article, and “Which is a serious hazard” is a fragment rather than a complete sentence. The clause about asking the neighbour is also difficult to follow because its verb forms and sentence structure are incomplete. There are some punctuation and sentence-boundary problems as well. Practise forming complete clauses and checking articles and verb forms, especially in longer sentences.
