Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Mam,

Myself krishnkant Sharma. I am recently moved to 706 house no of your building and writing this letter express my inconvinience related to the some leakage problems in my house my appartment.

I have been facing issue with bathroom leakage from upstair appartment. When initally I came for viewing of the appartment there wasn't any problem, but from last few week I have been facing leakage problem from the above flat in my bathroom. Due to this issue, I am not able to use my bathroom from last week and have to use gym bathroom.

Futhermore, I tried to speak to the owner of the other house, but unfortunately he was not available during usual working hour, I believe he is working night shift. Hence, I request you to please inform the other person about my issue and ask them to get this fixed as soon as possible. Even it will be great, if you personally come to my house and inspect the problem by yourself.

I hereby request you take this matter into consideration and try to find some possible solution for my leakage problem.

I look forward for neccessary action on this issue.

Best Regards,

Krishnkant Sharma.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three requirements clearly: you describe the bathroom leak from the apartment above, explain its effect on your ability to use the bathroom, suggest contacting the other resident and arranging a repair, and ask the manager to inspect it. The details about having to use the gym bathroom and being unable to reach the neighbour help explain the urgency. Your purpose remains clear throughout. To strengthen the letter further, make the requested action more specific—for example, ask the manager to arrange an inspection with the upstairs resident and confirm when repairs can begin. The proposed solution is relevant, but the final request for a “possible solution” is somewhat general after the earlier, clearer requests.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall progression: you introduce yourself and the problem, describe its impact, explain your attempt to contact the neighbour, and make requests before closing. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and connectors such as “Furthermore” and “Hence” help show relationships between ideas. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some features of more flexible linking. However, several transitions feel formulaic, and the opening sentence combines too many points, making the problem harder to follow at first. The repeated references to requesting action in the final two paragraphs also create some redundancy. Separate the introduction from the problem details and use more direct links between events and requests.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the situation, using relevant terms such as “leakage,” “inspect,” “owner,” and “working hour.” However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce accuracy, including “inconvinience,” “Futhermore,” “neccessary,” and “upstair appartment.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “from last few week” and “come to my house and inspect the problem by yourself.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the main issue, but they make the letter less fluent and precise. Build accuracy by checking spelling and learning common collocations for repairs and formal requests, such as “water is leaking from the apartment above” and “inspect the damage in person.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “but” and a reason-and-result link with “Hence.” The main message is generally understandable, but grammatical control is uneven, and several errors occur in sentence construction and verb patterns. For example, “I am recently moved” should use a past-tense form, while “writing this letter express” is missing a grammatical link such as “to.” In “I request you take this matter,” the request structure needs “to” or a suitable alternative. Articles and prepositions are also inconsistent, as in “from last week.” Aim to produce shorter, complete sentences first, then check tense, articles, and the structure following verbs such as “request” and “ask.”
