Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr.Badalia,
I am writing to bring your attention towards the urgent equipments replacement in my apartment. I have been living in this apartment for more than a year and everything was working perfectly fine.
Since last week, the oven and dishwasher are giving trouble. As you know, I have a busy schedule that makes it difficult for me to wash dishes by myself as well as heating food in the pan in the absence of oven. All the chores are time-consuming and it is very challenging for me to survive without dishwasher and oven. I would appreciate, if you could fix or replace both the appliances at the earliest.
It would be great, if you can visit my apartment and inspect the appliances one time before getting replaced. Sometimes, these equipments get fixed with replacement of wire or switch. I would suggest try to visit my home this weekend so the problem can be resolved without delay.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Tam

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter clearly addresses all three requirements: you describe the oven and dishwasher problems, request that they be fixed or replaced, and invite the manager to inspect them. The explanation that your busy schedule makes washing dishes and heating food difficult gives the request a clear purpose, while suggesting a weekend visit makes the next step practical. Your tone is appropriately polite and the purpose remains clear throughout. To make the response more fully developed, specify what is happening to each appliance—for example, whether the oven will not heat or the dishwasher will not drain—and give a more precise proposed time for the visit. This would make the repair request more informative and actionable.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows a clear sequence: you introduce the reason for writing, explain the appliance problems and their effect, then request repairs and a visit. Paragraphing supports this progression, and phrases such as “Since last week” and “Looking forward to hearing from you” help signal the letter’s stages. The connection between the problem and its impact is also easy to follow. Some linking is less smooth, however: “Sometimes, these equipments get fixed with replacement of wire or switch” interrupts the request to arrange an inspection, and “one time” is an awkward reference to the visit. Grouping the proposed inspection and possible repair options more directly would make the progression more natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for a repair request, including “urgent,” “inspect,” “resolved without delay,” and “time-consuming.” These choices communicate the inconvenience and desired action clearly. There are also some inaccurate or unnatural collocations and word forms: “bring your attention towards” is less natural than “bring to your attention,” “urgent equipments replacement” is awkward, and “these equipments” uses an unsuitable plural form. “Survive without” sounds overly dramatic for this context, while “heating food in the pan in the absence of oven” is imprecise. Aim for natural, specific phrases such as “the appliances have stopped working properly” and “heat food on the stove.” This would improve precision and tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The letter includes a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, such as “Since last week, the oven and dishwasher are giving trouble” and the clause explaining how your schedule affects you. Meaning remains clear, and the closing and request sentences are generally easy to understand. Some grammatical errors remain, including the conditional form in “I would appreciate, if you could” (the comma is unnecessary), “I would suggest try to visit” (use “suggest that you visit”), and “before getting replaced,” where the appliances should be the subject of the replacement. There are also article and number issues in “in absence of oven” and “replacement of wire or switch.” More consistent control of these patterns, alongside the range already attempted, would strengthen accuracy.
