IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have a problem in your apartment that needs repairs.

Write a letter to the building manager. In your letter
• describe the problem.
• say what you think should be done about it.
• ask the building manager to visit your apartment to see the problem.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear _________,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear ______,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this to express my resentment about an issue in my apartment, which is a part of your esteemed management. Recently, some children at the playground broke our kitchen window glass and the problems have been significantly escalating since then.

To begin, initially we tried sealing the dismantled glass, but it fell apart because of the current wind gust. The extreme weather conditions are making it strenous for us to use the sink and cooking area. To add, we beholded a notable number of incoming tiny insects and cockroaches. This situation is really getting detrimental for me and my family.

However, I believe this can be mitigated by complete replacement of the window as the glass holder is no longer usable. I request you to priorly arrange a visit to my place and inspect the area.

Looking forward to kindly hearing back from you.

Yours faithfully,

Shreya

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three requirements: it explains that children broke the kitchen window, proposes replacing it, and asks the manager to visit and inspect the apartment. The consequences—wind entering the kitchen and insects and cockroaches getting inside—help make the repair request clear and relevant. Your position is consistent, and the proposed solution is specific. To strengthen the response further, develop the practical request with a little more detail, such as asking when the manager could visit or requesting that a repair be arranged promptly. The opening phrase “express my resentment” also sounds more confrontational than necessary for a routine maintenance letter; a neutral, direct explanation would suit the purpose better. Overall, the task is clearly and fully addressed, though some details could be developed more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear progression: you introduce the problem, describe its effects, suggest a solution, and request an inspection. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “To begin,” “To add,” and “However” help signal movement between points. The reader can follow the main message throughout. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical or do not express the relationship between ideas precisely; for example, “However” introduces a solution that follows naturally from the problem rather than contrasting with it. The first paragraph also combines the background and the escalating consequences in one long sentence. For a stronger, more flexible flow, use simpler transitions where appropriate and separate the cause, effects, and requested action clearly.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a range of vocabulary to describe the damage and its effects, including “extreme weather conditions,” “incoming tiny insects,” and “complete replacement.” These choices show an attempt to be precise and to use less common language. However, several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural for this context: “express my resentment,” “dismantled glass,” “beholded a notable number,” and “priorly arrange” make the letter sound less fluent. “Strenous” is also misspelled, and “glass holder” is not the clearest term for the window frame. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the repair request, but more natural collocations and accurate word forms would improve control. Prefer straightforward maintenance vocabulary over overly formal or unusual phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The letter includes a useful mix of sentence forms, including the relative clause in “an issue in my apartment, which is a part of your esteemed management” and the reason clause “because of the current wind gust.” Most sentences communicate the situation clearly, and the request is expressed directly. Some grammatical choices are less controlled, particularly in “the problems have been significantly escalating,” where the plural reference is vague, and “I request you to priorly arrange,” where the verb pattern is awkward. The sentence beginning “To begin, initially” also uses two introductory markers unnecessarily. Aim for cleaner sentence construction and more natural request patterns, such as “Could you arrange a visit to inspect the damage?” This would preserve your range while improving accuracy and fluency.
