Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Rahul,

I am writing this letter regarding the continous leaking of water in my apartments since last week from kitchen and washroom taps. This causes floor slippery and prone to injuries. I doubt if this problem is not resolved in short spam then it could reach to next door apartments walls.

I search over google and talk to multiple technicians for their advice, according to them water pipes are broken of the building that causing the pressure to release water from taps even after tightly closed. I believe you should consult plumber and check the water pipes leakges so that it can be fixed immediately before its too late.

I recommend to visit my place today to see the alarming situation by yourself and estimate the cost of repairing pipes and taps.

I think prompt action is required from yourside before more damage is done to building.

Yours sincelerly,

Mehak Kumar

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three requested points: you describe leaking taps in the kitchen and washroom, recommend that the manager consult a plumber and inspect the pipes, and ask for a visit “today.” The possible risk of damage to neighbouring apartments also explains why action is needed, giving the request a clear purpose. Your position remains consistent and the letter is relevant throughout. To make the ideas more fully developed, clarify exactly what you have observed—for example, whether water continues to drip when the taps are closed—and specify a suitable time for the manager’s visit. The explanation about broken pipes is presented as technicians’ advice, but a little more detail about the evidence would make this claim more convincing and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: you introduce the problem, explain its possible cause and consequences, propose a repair, and request an inspection. The paragraph breaks support this sequence, while phrases such as “according to them,” “so that,” and “before more damage is done” help connect the ideas. The purpose is easy to follow from beginning to end. Some linking is less natural or slightly repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “before” and the transition from your online search to the technicians’ advice. You could improve the flow by grouping the cause and evidence more smoothly, then moving directly to the requested action. A more specific closing request would also make the final paragraph feel more complete.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the situation, including “slippery,” “injuries,” “technicians,” “water pipes,” and “repairing,” so the reader can understand the practical problem. There are also attempts at more precise language, such as “alarming situation” and “estimate the cost.” However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce accuracy: “continous,” “spam,” “leakges,” and “sincelerly” are incorrect, while “my apartments” and “pressure to release water” are awkward in this context. Some phrases also sound less natural in a formal letter, such as “search over google.” Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for plumbing problems, such as “a continuous leak” and “the taps continue to drip.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a conditional sentence (“if this problem is not resolved… then it could reach…”) and a purpose clause (“so that it can be fixed…”). These attempts help communicate urgency and proposed action. However, errors in sentence construction and grammatical patterns are frequent enough to affect smooth reading. For example, “This causes floor slippery” needs an article and a different structure, such as “This makes the floor slippery”; “pipes are broken of the building” has an incorrect construction; and “I recommend to visit my place” uses an incorrect verb pattern. Review articles, prepositions, and verb patterns, and divide long sentences where needed. More consistently accurate simple sentences would make your message clearer.
