Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to make a request regarding the ongoing issue in the apartment. The kitchen sink is clogged for last two days and it is difficult for us to use the sink for cleaning our dishes.

I think the sink tubeline is too old and it needs to be replaced, the dust and rust is the major cause of the clogging. Moreover, it can be fixed easily by implementing the new pipeline or by cleaning the all dirt under the sink.

It is my humble request if you could do a visit in our apartment and have a look on the current situation which may gives you the clarity what needs to be done.In addition,I would really appreciate it if you could contact the maintenance team for the repair of the sink if needed.

I look forward hearing from you and will see you in our apartment at your earliest convenience.

Yours sincerely

Thehi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three requirements: it describes the clogged kitchen sink and its effect on washing dishes, suggests replacing or cleaning the pipework, and asks the manager to visit and inspect the problem. The purpose is clear throughout, and the proposed actions are relevant. The explanation that the pipe is old and that dirt or rust may be causing the blockage gives useful support, although the cause is presented as a certainty rather than a possibility and the repair options could be explained more precisely. The request for a visit is polite and explicit. To strengthen the response further, clarify which repair you recommend and give a practical detail, such as a suitable time for the manager to come.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The message follows a clear sequence: it introduces the problem, explains a possible cause and solution, then requests an inspection and repair. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “In addition” help connect related points. The closing is also appropriate for a formal request. Some connections are less smooth because several ideas are packed into long sentences, particularly the sentence beginning “It is my humble request,” and punctuation spacing makes the flow less polished. Use shorter, more clearly separated sentences and ensure each paragraph has one main purpose. This would make the organisation feel more natural while preserving the clear overall progression already present.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to explain the issue and make a formal request, including “ongoing issue,” “clogged,” “maintenance team,” and “current situation.” The meaning is generally understandable, but several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “sink tubeline,” “do a visit,” and “have a look on.” “Cleaning the all dirt” is also awkward, and “humble request” sounds overly formulaic in this context. These choices limit precision and naturalness, even though they do not prevent the reader from understanding the message. Aim for standard repair-related phrases and more natural formal expressions, such as “plumbing,” “visit the apartment,” and “inspect the problem.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, such as the conditional request “if you could contact the maintenance team” and the relative clause “which may gives you the clarity.” The overall meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “for last two days” needs an article and a different preposition (“for the last two days”), “which may gives” has incorrect verb agreement, and “I look forward hearing” is missing “to.” There are also punctuation and spacing issues, including missing spaces after full stops and commas. Review verb forms, fixed grammatical patterns, and sentence punctuation; correcting these would make the letter more accurate without changing its clear message.
