Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear John,
I hope you are doing well. The main reason I am writing this letter to address you about the problems I am facing with my washing machine. Since past few days, I am unable to do my laundry as the filter is damaged and not working well.
However, I think the filter need to be clean by the technician. As this machine is very old and need a routine maintenance.Furthermore, even dryer is not in a good condition, even after drying my clothes for more than an hour, they remain partly wet.I believe we need to fix that as well.
Lastly, if you could spare some time and visit my apartment on this Friday then I can show you how difficult it has been for me all the time. I will be at home in the mornings, you can come between 9 am - 11 am.
Thankyou for your attention to this matter and I will wait for your prompt response.
Yours kindly,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requirements: it explains that the washing-machine filter is damaged, recommends a technician and maintenance, and asks John to visit on Friday. The additional dryer problem is relevant and helps clarify the repair needs. Your request for a visit is specific, including the morning time window, and the purpose of the letter remains clear throughout. To make the ideas more fully developed, explain briefly what the damaged filter is causing—for example, whether the machine cannot drain or complete a cycle—and state more directly what action you want the manager to arrange. This would make the proposed repairs and the manager’s role especially clear.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows a clear sequence: you introduce the washing-machine issue, add the dryer concern, and then request an inspection. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore” and “Lastly” help signal the movement between points. The closing also fits the purpose of a formal request. Some connections are less smooth: “However” does not clearly contrast with the previous sentence, and “even” is repeated in the dryer sentence, making the relationship between the two details awkward. Use transitions that show addition or consequence more precisely, and separate the dryer information into a clean sentence. This would make the cohesion feel more flexible and less dependent on signposting words.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary to explain the repair issue, including “filter,” “routine maintenance,” “technician,” and “prompt response.” These choices make the situation understandable, and the tone is generally suitable for writing to a building manager. Some phrases are imprecise or unnatural, however: “address you about the problems” and “the filter need to be clean” do not express the intended meaning idiomatically. “Thankyou” is also conventionally written as two words. Aim for more precise repair-related collocations and conventional letter-writing expressions, such as “report a problem with” and “have the filter cleaned.” This would improve naturalness without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and the meaning is generally clear. For example, the sentence beginning “even after drying my clothes for more than an hour” adds useful detail, while the visit request includes a conditional structure. Some grammatical errors remain: “Since past few days” needs an article and a more suitable tense, “the filter need” has subject–verb disagreement, and “the machine is very old and need” repeats that agreement problem. There are also punctuation issues where sentences run together, as in “routine maintenance.Furthermore,” and “partly wet.I believe.” Review agreement, tense choices, and sentence boundaries to make the structures more consistently accurate.
