Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Ajay,

I am writing this letter to express my concern about malfunctioning laundary machines in my apartment. I moved to this apartment in your building last month. Just after one week I realised that these machines started developing problem. whenever, I start washer it makes a lot of noise. Initially, I thought it was because of over load but that was not the case. Additionally, dryer is also not functioning properly, even after two rounds on same clothes, it does not dry them completly.

In my opinion, this equipment is too old now, that is why it is creating such problems. Therefore, you are requested to come and inspect, if it requires to repair or replace before this upcoming weekend as I have a heep of clothes to wash and I am going to a vacation next week. I will be waiting for your response as per your earlier convenience.

Yours trustworthy,

Raveena.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three requirements: you describe the noisy washer and ineffective dryer, suggest inspection and possible repair or replacement, and ask Ajay to visit. The practical context—your upcoming trip and the pile of laundry—also supports the request and makes the purpose clear. Your position remains consistent throughout. To make the response more fully developed, specify when the manager could visit or how to arrange access, and explain briefly what you have already tried beyond checking whether the washer was overloaded. The proposed solution is relevant, though “inspect, if it requires to repair or replace” leaves the decision and requested action somewhat unclear. Overall, the letter covers the task with relevant supporting details, but a few ideas could be extended more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible progression: you introduce the problem, describe each machine, then explain your proposed action and why it is urgent. The opening and closing also make the purpose and tone clear. Linking expressions such as “Additionally,” “Initially,” and “Therefore” help connect the points, and the contrast between your first assumption and the actual problem is easy to follow. However, the response is presented as one long body paragraph, so separating the problem from the request would make the organisation easier to scan. Some links feel mechanical, and “I will be waiting for your response as per your earlier convenience” is not a clear reference to a specific earlier arrangement. More natural transitions and clearer paragraphing would strengthen the progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the situation, including “malfunctioning,” “inspect,” “overload,” and “functioning properly.” These choices communicate the repair issue clearly, and the reader can understand the urgency. There are, however, several spelling and word-choice problems, such as “laundary,” “completly,” and “heep.” Some expressions are also unnatural or imprecise: “developing problem” and “a vacation” do not sound idiomatic in this context, while “Yours trustworthy” is not a conventional letter closing. These slips do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim to use standard collocations for appliance faults and a conventional sign-off, and proofread spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including a conditional idea in “if it requires to repair or replace” and a reason clause in “that is why it is creating such problems.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “Just after one week I realised that these machines started developing problem” needs more accurate article use and verb phrasing; “whenever, I start washer” has punctuation and article problems; and “even after two rounds on same clothes, it does not dry them” has unclear sentence structure and reference. The request sentence also combines several ideas without a clear grammatical pattern. Practise articles, clause construction, and punctuation, while keeping complex sentences controlled.
