Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. John,

I am Rasanpreet, one of the tenant in your building, and I am writing this letter to request for repair regarding leakage of tap in the kitchen.

Since past week, I had noticed had their was some water leakage in the tap, once I closed it.However, from yesterday the leakage is so uncontrollable that even though, I turn off the tap, water keeps running with the same pace. This has resulted in making my whole kitchen and apartment mess, as water is everywhere on the countertops.

To handle this situation, a plumber must be sent right away to fix it and also, as the lease mentioned, you will be handling all the expenses because it has been just a month, since I shifted to this apartment. Moreover, to ensure such situation does not occurs in the future, all the taps of the entire apartment should be inspected.

I request you to visit the apartment in order to see the damage that this leakage has caused me.

Hoping for a prompt response from your side.

Yours Sincerely,

Rasanpreet Jaura

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The letter covers all three requested points clearly: you explain that the kitchen tap leaks, recommend sending a plumber and inspecting the other taps, and ask the manager to visit. The urgency is supported by the contrast between the earlier leak and the worsening problem “from yesterday,” while the reference to the lease explains why you expect the repair costs to be covered. These details make the request purposeful and well developed. To make the response even more complete, specify a convenient time for the manager’s visit or explain how they can arrange access. The description of the resulting damage could also be more precise, but the task is otherwise addressed effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter follows a clear, appropriate progression: it introduces the repair request, describes how the leak has worsened, proposes action, and closes with a request for a visit. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “However,” “Moreover,” and “To handle this situation” guide the reader through the points. The sequence from the initial leak to its current impact is especially easy to follow. Some connections are less smooth because punctuation is missing after “it” and “However,” and the final request could connect more directly to the proposed repair. A more concise closing and careful punctuation would make the cohesion feel more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a repair request, including “water leakage,” “uncontrollable,” “lease,” “expenses,” and “inspected.” These choices communicate the problem and the action you want the manager to take. However, some phrases are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “request for repair regarding leakage of tap,” “my whole kitchen and apartment mess,” and “damage that this leakage has caused me.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Prefer conventional collocations such as “request a repair to the kitchen tap,” “left my kitchen in a mess,” and “damage caused by the leak.” More precise vocabulary for the water damage would also strengthen the description.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter attempts a mix of simple and complex structures, including the time contrast in “Since past week…” and the conditional clause “even though I turn off the tap.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur across the response. For example, “one of the tenant” needs plural agreement, and “I had noticed had their was” contains a faulty verb construction. The sentence beginning “To handle this situation” also has agreement and verb-form problems in “does not occurs.” Review articles, plurals, tense choices, and clause construction, and proofread punctuation around sentence boundaries. Shorter, accurately formed sentences would help you retain the intended meaning while improving control.
