Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing this letter to express a problem regarding the water in my apartment.
There has been a water issue since a week in our residence. We are not getting adequate water to use for our day to day needs. Most of the time, the members here eagerly wait for the water but end up with wasting our precious time. Something has to be done for the existing difficutly in our area.
There must be a block in the pipe which unable the water to flow. Therefore, it needs to be repaired as early as possible. Otherwise it will be creating a huge situation in coming days. As a building manager it is your primary resposibility to see the works done.
It will be recommnanded more, if you would come and examine the problem that we are facing on daily routine.
Kind regards
Kumar Babu

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three requested points: it describes inadequate water supply, proposes that a pipe blockage be repaired, and asks the manager to visit and examine the problem. The purpose is clear, and the details about residents waiting for water help explain the impact. However, the proposed cause is presented as a certainty (“There must be a block”) without evidence, and the request for a visit is brief and awkwardly phrased, so these points are less fully developed than the description of the problem. The response also falls two words short of the required minimum. Add a specific example of when the supply fails and a clear, courteous request for an inspection and repair.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The information is arranged in a sensible sequence: the opening states the purpose, the next paragraph describes the water shortage, and the following paragraphs suggest a repair and request a visit. Paragraphing supports the letter’s progression, and linking expressions such as “Therefore” and “Otherwise” make the relationship between ideas clear. This is a coherent overall arrangement. To make the flow more polished, avoid abrupt or loosely connected statements such as “Something has to be done” and “As a building manager it is your primary responsibility.” The final request could also connect more directly to the proposed inspection. A clearer progression from problem, to requested action, to visit would make cohesion more flexible and less formulaic.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response has enough vocabulary to communicate the main issue, including “adequate water,” “existing difficulty,” and “examine the problem.” It also attempts more formal language appropriate to a letter to a manager. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “water issue since a week,” “end up with wasting,” and “creating a huge situation.” Spelling errors in “difficutly,” “resposibility,” and “recommnanded” also reduce accuracy. These problems do not prevent the reader from understanding the central message, but they make the letter less natural and precise. Prefer familiar, accurate collocations—for example, “water shortage for a week,” “waste time,” and “a serious problem”—rather than using formal-sounding phrases that do not fit the context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The letter uses a mix of simple sentences and some more complex forms, including “Therefore, it needs to be repaired…” and “Otherwise it will be creating…”. The main meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “There has been a water issue since a week” uses an incorrect time expression, while “the pipe which unable the water to flow” is missing a finite verb construction. The conditional request, “if you would come,” is also not formed naturally. Aim for accurate patterns such as “There has been a water shortage for a week,” “a blockage that is preventing water from flowing,” and “I would appreciate it if you could visit.” This would improve control while retaining sentence variety.
