Student answer (Band 6.5)

In modern society, many parents believe that early education is vital and will benefit their children. While, some people are opponent this statement. In this essay, both merits and drawbacks will be discussed.

Firstly, sending kids to school in their early age could boost their cognitive skills. It is evident that the best age group for brain progress is between three and five, therefore, this is the best time to enroll their children in various activities and materials which could help stimulate their brains at this golden age. In addition, sending toddlers to preschool can not only help their interpersonal skills but also communication skills. As there are numerous opportunities to interact with their peers and teachers.

On the other hand, a wide range of people are holding opposite standpoints. For some children too early leaving their parents might lead to mental problems such as separation anxiety. furthermore, education fees might be a huge financial burden for some families like low-income households, who cannot afford it. For instance, many poor families in India cannot afford to send their children to preschool due their financial problem.

In conclusion, I would like to restate that although there are a few drawbacks of early education but merits cannot be overlooked. preschool education is crucial for present and future of children and it cannot be postponed until their pass the golden age.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses both the advantages and disadvantages of preschool education, fulfilling the main requirements of the prompt. However, the response is under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of the arguments provided. While the points regarding cognitive development and social skills are relevant, they are somewhat brief. The counter-arguments regarding separation anxiety and financial costs are also introduced but could have been expanded with more detailed analysis or examples to fully develop the response. Because the length requirement was not met, the development of ideas is restricted, preventing a higher score in this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. There is a logical progression from the introduction to the advantages, then the disadvantages, and finally the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with sentence-level cohesion, such as the sentence fragment 'As there are numerous opportunities to interact with their peers and teachers.' Despite these minor flaws, the overall structure is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at more sophisticated vocabulary, such as 'cognitive skills', 'interpersonal skills', and 'financial burden'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'opponent this statement' (should be 'opposed to') and 'too early leaving their parents' (should be 'leaving their parents too early'). These errors do not significantly impede communication, but they do limit the range and precision of the vocabulary used.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with articles ('the golden age'), prepositions ('due their financial problem'), and sentence fragments. The punctuation is mostly functional, but there are errors in capitalization and sentence boundaries. The frequency of these errors suggests that the writer has not yet mastered complex structures, though the errors rarely cause confusion for the reader. More attention to subject-verb agreement and sentence construction would improve the score.
