Student answer (Band 8.0)

In this medernisation era, some parents choose to send their children to preschool at the age of three or four, while others prefer to wait until they are old enough to attend primary school. Although early preschool education offers several advantages, it also has some drawbacks.

One of the main advantages of sending children to preschool at a young age is that it promotes their overall development. At preschool, children learn basic literacy and numeracy skills through fun and interactive activities, which can make the transition to primary school much smoother. In addition, they develop important social skills by interacting with teachers and classmates. For example, children learn how to share, cooperate, and communicate effectively, which helps them build confidence and form healthy relationships.

Another benefit is that preschool encourages independence. Young children gradually learn to complete simple tasks on their own, such as organizing their belongings, following instructions, and solving minor problems. These experiences prepare them to become more responsible and self-reliant in the future. Furthermore, preschool can be particularly helpful for working parents, as it provides a safe and structured environment while they are at work.

However, enrolling children in preschool at an early age also has some disadvantages. One concern is that very young children may experience separation anxiety when they spend long hours away from their parents. This can cause emotional stress and make it difficult for them to adapt to the new environment. Moreover, preschool education can be expensive, placing a financial burden on many families, especially those with limited incomes.

Another drawback is that children may have less time for unstructured play and family interaction. Free play at home helps develop creativity and strengthens family bonds, while excessive academic activities at a very young age may create unnecessary pressure. Every child develops at a different pace, and some may benefit more from staying at home until they are emotionally and socially ready for formal education.

In conclusion, sending children to preschool at the age of three or four can improve their academic readiness, social abilities, and independence. However, parents should also consider potential challenges such as emotional stress, financial costs, and reduced family time.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a balanced discussion by outlining both the advantages (social skills, independence, support for working parents) and the disadvantages (separation anxiety, financial costs, reduced family time). Your position is clear from the introduction through to the conclusion. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of 'organizing belongings' and 'sharing' to illustrate developmental benefits. The structure is logical and follows the prompt's requirements effectively. To reach a higher band, ensure that every point is linked back to the core question of whether the benefits outweigh the drawbacks, though your current approach is already very strong.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In addition', 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'Moreover'. These transitions help the reader follow your argument without difficulty. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the advantages from the disadvantages. The referencing is clear, and the flow between sentences is smooth. The essay demonstrates a high level of control over the structure, making the information easy to follow and digest. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the topic. Phrases like 'overall development', 'literacy and numeracy skills', 'separation anxiety', and 'financial burden' show a solid command of topic-specific language. While there is a minor spelling error in the first sentence ('medernisation' instead of 'modernization'), this does not impede communication. You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to express your ideas with precision. To improve further, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions to demonstrate a wider, more flexible range of lexical items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use complex sentences effectively, such as 'Although early preschool education offers several advantages, it also has some drawbacks.' Your control over punctuation and grammar is generally strong, with the majority of sentences being error-free. There are no significant grammatical errors that cause confusion or impede the reader's understanding. The use of modal verbs and conditional structures is accurate. To achieve a higher band, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex structures, such as inversion or more advanced relative clauses, to show greater flexibility.
