Student answer (Band 7.0)

Nowadays, parents have different opinion regarding right age of children to start their school. While some believe that attending school at early age will help to develop their essential skills, others think children should stay at home until they are ready for primary school. This essay will discuss both pros and cones of sending children to preschool at a early age.

One of the main advantage of preschool is that it helps to children for developing social and communication skills. At school, Children learn how to interact with others, share toys or foods and express their ideas to others with confident. As a result, they become confident and cooperative. In addition, children can learn basic skills such as alphabets, numbers, shapes and colors. As this help them to become familiar with school environment. As a result, they often adapt more easily to primary school's daily routine.

However, there are also disadvantages to starting a new school in a early age. Firstly, they feel like separation and increase their emotional stress. As they miss their parents and feel insecure during the first few weeks of their school which can affect their emotional well being. Secondly, spending long hour at preschool reduces their playtime in their early developmental phase. However, some preschools focus too much on academic learning rather than any developmental skills, which may create stress and reduce interest in learning.

In conclusion, sending children to preschool at a young age has both benefits and drawbacks. It helps them develop social, communication, and basic academic skills, but it may also lead to separation anxiety and reduce their playtime. In my opinion, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages because preschool prepares children for future education. However, it is essential that preschools provide a balanced environment where equal importance is given to learning, play, and emotional development.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all parts of the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of early preschool attendance. Your position is clear throughout the essay, and you provide a balanced view before concluding with your own opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as social development and separation anxiety. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting examples are more specific. For instance, instead of saying 'children learn how to interact', you could briefly describe a specific scenario or a common observation in a classroom setting. Overall, the response is well-structured and directly answers the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'However', and 'As a result' to link your ideas. While the progression is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. For example, the repetition of 'As a result' in the second paragraph could be improved by using a wider variety of linking phrases. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a central theme. The referencing is generally clear, though minor improvements in sentence-level flow would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'developmental phase', 'separation anxiety', and 'balanced environment'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'pros and cones' (should be 'pros and cons'), 'with confident' (should be 'with confidence'), and 'in a early age' (should be 'at an early age'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and prepositions. Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated synonyms would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully convey your ideas, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the' vs 'a') and pluralization, such as 'helps to children' (should be 'helps children') and 'alphabets' (should be 'the alphabet'). There are also minor punctuation and preposition errors throughout the text. Despite these slips, your meaning remains clear, and the errors do not cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct usage of articles in academic writing.
