Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some parents send their children to preschool when they are three or four years old, while others prefer to wait until they are ready for primary school. Both choices have advantages and disadvantages.

One major advantage of preschool is that children can learn basic skills at an early age. Whereas, they can learn numbers, letters, colours and simple words through fun activities. Besides this, preschool also helps children become more independent and confident. Although, they learn how to share toys, follow rules and communication with other students. For instance, a child who attends preschool may find it easier to make friends and adjust to primary school latter.

Furthermore, there are also some disadvantages. First, young children may feel nervous or unhappy when they are separate from their parents for many hours. Moreover, some children may not be emotionally ready for school environment. In addition, preschool can sometimes put pressure on children to learn academic subjects too early. Additionally, they may have less time for free play and spending time with their family.

In my opinion, sending children to preschool at the age of three or four can be beneficial if the school provides a safe, friendly and enjoyable environment for the children. However, parents should also consider their child's personality and emotional readiness. Therefore, preschool can be good choice, but it should not be a forced on every child.

In conclusion, sending children to preschool at a young age has both advantages and disadvantages. Whereas, it can improve their learning, confidence and social skills, but some children may feel stressed or miss their family. Therefore, parents should choose preschool according to their child's needs and readiness.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of preschool. The position is clear throughout, and the ideas are relevant. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the point about 'academic subjects' is mentioned but not fully explored with specific examples or deeper analysis. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand on your points with more detailed explanations or real-world examples. The structure is logical, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points while maintaining a balanced perspective.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore,' 'In addition,' and 'In conclusion.' However, there are some instances of awkward usage, such as starting sentences with 'Whereas' or 'Although' as conjunctions without a main clause, which makes the flow feel slightly mechanical. Improving the variety and precision of your linking words will help your writing sound more natural and cohesive.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. You use some topic-specific terms like 'emotionally ready,' 'academic subjects,' and 'social skills.' However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simple, repetitive phrasing. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and less common vocabulary. For example, instead of 'good choice,' you could use 'a viable option' or 'a beneficial alternative.' There are no significant spelling errors, and the vocabulary used is generally accurate in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'communication with other students' should be 'communicating with other students,' and 'latter' is used incorrectly instead of 'later.' Additionally, there are minor issues with sentence fragments, such as 'Whereas, they can learn...' and 'Although, they learn...'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of subordinating conjunctions.
