Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, there has been an ongoing debate on pre-schooling of children at early age. Some parents send their three or four year old kids to school. While others wait until they old enough for primary education. There are number of advantages and disadvantages of pre-schooling for children.

On the one side, one of the main benefits of sending kids to kindergarten school is to make them independent at early age. The children who are learning educational values in preschool are more likely to be focused and attentive in their primary school. Moreover, pre-schooling allows them to develop hobbies which is beneficial for them to improve their skills and it leads to build some confidence in them. It may provide an opportunity for kids to make friends at school. For example, children who could be able to make friends at early age are often share thoughts confidently with other students and tutors in their primary school.

One the other side, there are some drawbacks of sending children to school at a young age. Firstly, they might not get enough time to spend with their families and siblings. Due to this, they are less likely to develop cultural and family values at home. Secondly, they often have less time for playing and resting which make them irritated. For instance, children who are not getting time for entertainment are less vulnerable. As a result, they might sometimes show disrespect towards their elders.

In conclusion, although there are some disadvantages of pre-schooling such as, less time with their close ones and less cultural value. However, preschool help kids to develop their congnitive abilities and make them less dependent on others. If the school provide social and cultural values at preschool the main drawback of pre-schooling could be solved.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both the advantages and disadvantages of preschooling as required by the prompt. The position is clear throughout, and the ideas are generally relevant. However, some points are under-developed. For example, the argument regarding children being 'less vulnerable' when they lack entertainment is unclear and lacks logical support. Additionally, the conclusion introduces a suggestion about schools providing social values, which is a new idea rather than a summary of the preceding arguments. To reach a higher band, ensure that every point made is fully explained with clear, logical reasoning and that the conclusion remains focused on synthesizing the main points already discussed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one side,' 'Moreover,' and 'Firstly' are used to guide the reader. However, the use of some cohesive devices is slightly mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is interrupted by awkward phrasing, such as the transition in the conclusion ('although there are some disadvantages... However, preschool help...'). Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that sentences within paragraphs flow more naturally would enhance the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'cognitive abilities' and 'educational values.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'pre-schooling of children at early age' (should be 'at an early age') and 'less vulnerable' (which does not fit the context of the argument). The range is sufficient to communicate the message, but more precise and varied vocabulary would be needed to move into the higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('at early age' instead of 'at an early age'), subject-verb agreement ('preschool help' instead of 'preschool helps'), and sentence fragments or awkward phrasing ('While others wait until they old enough'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the frequency of these errors occasionally distracts the reader. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, specifically regarding articles and verb forms, and practice constructing more complex sentences without sacrificing accuracy.
