Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both the advantages and disadvantages of early preschool attendance. The position is clear, and the ideas are relevant. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the claim that early schooling leads to 'diseases such as depression' is a significant generalization that lacks nuanced support or a logical link to preschool specifically. While the prompt is addressed, the arguments could be more thoroughly extended with more concrete examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. The structure is logical, and the conclusion provides a clear summary of the writer's stance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In addition', 'However', and 'In conclusion', which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly repetitive. For example, the opening paragraph contains a redundant structure: 'While some parents start... while others wait...'. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the use of 'this' to refer to broad concepts. Despite these minor issues, the progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'intellectual and social skills' and 'academic expectations'. However, there are instances of awkward word choices and collocations, such as 'start school of children' instead of 'starting children in school' and 'mental development issue' instead of 'mental health concerns'. The range is sufficient to discuss the topic, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Spelling is generally accurate, but the word choice is often simplistic.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the fluency of the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('the issue... become', 'early schooling have'), incorrect verb forms ('it will helps'), and awkward phrasing ('as early they start study it will helps'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence construction often feels clunky. The writer demonstrates an ability to use complex sentences, but the accuracy is inconsistent, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher band in this criterion.
