Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both the advantages and disadvantages of preschool as required by the prompt. The ideas are relevant, such as the development of social skills and routine versus the potential for poor supervision. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For example, the disadvantage regarding 'careless teachers' is a bit vague and could have been supported with a more concrete example of how this impacts a child's long-term academic readiness. The position is clear throughout, and the essay follows a logical structure, meeting the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To commence with', 'Despite having the benefits', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'To articulate it' to introduce the second disadvantage. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the third paragraph where the connection between 'careless teachers' and the conclusion about 'further studies' feels a bit disjointed. Overall, the progression of ideas is coherent, but the flow could be smoother with more varied linking phrases.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'foundation', 'self-motivated', and 'well-being'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'students are seemed more active' (should be 'seem') and 'lack with their further studies' (should be 'struggle with'). The range is sufficient to communicate, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score. Expanding the range of synonyms and improving collocation accuracy would significantly enhance this section.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'preschool plays a vital role to create' (should be 'in creating'), 'three to four years old children' (should be 'three- to four-year-old children'), and 'children may not ready' (should be 'may not be ready'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage would improve the accuracy.
