Student answer (Band 5.0)

There are a certain number of people believe that we should completely ban meat consumption. I do not agree with this statement. I will discuss my perspective further in the essay.

Many people believe meat consumption should not be banned as meat contains a large amount of protein. There are many people who depend on a meat as a source of protein. Even many doctors say people who consume meat are more likely to complete their daily protein intake easily. In some parts of the world there limited amount of vegetation is available. In these cases people have no other option than rely on meat as their source of food.

On the other hand people say that taking someone's life just for the sake of food because it is painful and brutal. In many cases people who run poultry farms do not take good care of the animals. They do not provide proper diet to the chickens, cows and fish. Moreover, they give them illegal drugs to boost their growth. This can harm animals as well as people who consume meat.

I strongly believe that meat consumption should not be banned entirely. Government should impose strict rules and regulations on poultry farms. They should introduce a proper diet plan for the animals, and make sure that everyone follows it. In addition to that slaughtering practices should be revised, so that the death of the animals becomes less painful.

To sum up, many people have strong arguments to ban meat consumption entirely. However, in my opinion, we should not ban it completely. We have to make sure that good care of animals is being taken with implementation of strong rules and regulations.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 2.0

The candidate has written about banning meat consumption rather than addressing the prompt regarding preschool at a young age. Although the text meets the length requirement, it is completely off-topic due to a misread or pre-memorised response. According to the band descriptors, when a response is largely off-topic, Task Achievement is significantly penalised. The ideas regarding protein, animal welfare, and government regulation are well-developed in their own right, but they fail to address the specific task prompt about sending three or four-year-old children to preschool versus waiting until primary school. Therefore, the task response is unsuccessful in fulfilling the prompt requirements, resulting in a band score of 2.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

Despite the severe off-topic nature of the content, the essay demonstrates clear structural organisation. The response features a logical progression with an introduction, separate body paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, a writer's opinion paragraph, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'Moreover', and 'To sum up' are used to connect ideas, and paragraphing is applied appropriately. Pronoun referencing is generally clear throughout the text. While the ideas do not answer the prompt, the internal organisation and cohesive flow of the writing itself demonstrate the characteristics of a Band 6.0 performance in terms of coherence and paragraphing.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The candidate demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully discussing complex topics such as 'protein intake', 'vegetation', 'poultry farms', and 'regulations'. There are attempts at less common vocabulary items like 'consumption', 'slaughtering practices', and 'implementation'. Some minor inaccuracies and awkward word choices occur, such as 'there limited amount of vegetation is available' and 'good care of animals is being taken', but these do not impede overall communication. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, placing this lexical performance firmly within the Band 6.0 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional-like structures and relative clauses (e.g., 'people who consume meat', 'In these cases people have no other option than rely on meat'). There are several noticeable grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('There are a certain number of people believe', 'depend on a meat', 'Government should impose'), preposition errors ('than rely on'), and missing words. However, punctuation is generally sound, and the errors rarely impede the reader's ability to understand the intended meaning. This equates to a solid Band 6.0 for grammatical range and accuracy.
