Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is a rapid growing debate among public whether young children should be sent to preschool or not. The proponents of this argument highlights teaching techniques as a basis for their advocacy for preschooling, while critics argue that peer pressue and parents absence shakes a child's confidence and impact the cognitive thinking.

One of the major selling point of preschooles is to help kids build social skills. Children from different societies with diverse backgrounds get together and learn to respect each other. It encourages kids to make friendships and share ideas, specially, as we know that average family size has reduced in the contemporary society, and kids usually spend their time alone at home either with their nanny or toys. Therefore, preschooling helps to fill this gap by effectively teaching socially acceptable behaviours. Moreover, preschools usually hire experts to handle pupils. These experts mostly are graduated in kids pyschology and best teaching practices. These teachers create an atmosphere of students engagements through quiz games or fun activities.

However, It has also been observed that preschools function as academies to train children for entry exams of schools in many countries. For example, high reputed schools in Pakistan usually shortlist candidates based on the oral, and written tests. and parents interviews. As a consequence, preschools put pressure on students to learn and behave in a certain manner which is expected to be tested in the admission test. It devoids a child its natural learning in a very young age, and consequently confidence of many kids shake if they donnot pass entry exam. Addtionally, working parents feel redeemed by sharing the responsibility with preschools for the upbringing of their kids, and eventually kids get deprived off to learn from their parents. It is famous quote in Urdu that mother's lap is the first school of a child, but by sending kids to preschools, parents just ignore their responibility.

In conclusion, on balance, there is a consensus that preschools employe experts and train children as per the modern teaching strategies, however a more focused approach whereby parents also provide ample amount of time to train kids and help them build up confidence is required. A legislation by governments whereby timing of preschools is reduced to couple of hours only can help to have a balanced approach.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses both advantages and disadvantages and maintains a clear overall view: preschool can develop social skills and provide expert teaching, but may create exam pressure and reduce parental involvement. The examples about children sharing ideas and school entrance tests in Pakistan make the discussion relevant. The conclusion also offers a balanced recommendation. This meets the task well, though some points are more fully explained than others. For instance, the social benefits are illustrated, while the claim that preschool deprives children of learning from parents is asserted rather than supported with a specific explanation or example. The proposed reduction in preschool hours is also introduced without showing why this is the best solution. Develop these points further to make the response more consistently persuasive and complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a coherent overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for benefits and drawbacks, and a concluding recommendation. The progression from social development to teaching expertise, then to exam pressure and parental responsibility, is generally easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “However,” and “As a consequence” help signal relationships between ideas. At times, though, connections feel mechanical or unclear: “Additionally” introduces a new concern without explaining its link to exam pressure, and the final paragraph moves quickly from a summary to a legislative proposal. Some sentence boundaries and punctuation also interrupt the flow, particularly the fragment-like “and parents interviews.” Use clearer transitions between distinct points and make the conclusion follow more directly from the discussion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The response uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including phrases such as “social skills,” “diverse backgrounds,” “cognitive thinking,” and “modern teaching strategies.” There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “socially acceptable behaviours” and “upbringing,” although some choices are inaccurate or unnatural. Examples include “rapid growing debate,” “selling point,” “feel redeemed,” and “deprived off”; these weaken precision, even though the intended meaning is usually recoverable. Spelling errors such as “pressue,” “pyschology,” “Addtionally,” and “responibility” also detract from control. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully, especially in key claims, so that the vocabulary supports rather than distracts from your argument.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “while,” “as,” and “which,” and most ideas remain understandable. However, some errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction reduce accuracy. For example, “The proponents … highlights” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “It devoids a child its natural learning” lacks a grammatical construction for the intended meaning. In “confidence of many kids shake,” the subject and verb do not agree, and “a legislation” uses an incorrect article pattern. Punctuation also needs attention: the sentence beginning “For example” is broken by a full stop before “and parents interviews.” Review agreement and article use, and proofread complex sentences to ensure each clause is complete and correctly connected.
