Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response identifies one relevant advantage of early preschool: children can learn to recognise numbers, shapes, colours and patterns, which may help them later. However, the task asks for both advantages and disadvantages, and no disadvantage is discussed. The claim that the benefits “arguably outweigh the drawbacks” gives a position, but it is not supported or explained, and the response ends before developing the point introduced by “Moreover.” The required minimum length is not met: the response contains 77 words, so the discussion is far too limited to address the task adequately. To improve, explain at least one benefit and one drawback, support each with reasons or an example, and state a conclusion that follows from the discussion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening introduces the topic and position, followed by a paragraph beginning “To commence with” that presents a benefit. The ideas within that paragraph are related, moving from early learning to possible future importance. However, the response is incomplete, so there is no developed progression through both sides of the question or a conclusion. “Moreover” is left without the additional idea it signals, which interrupts the flow. The opening sentence also combines several points without clear punctuation. Use separate paragraphs for the introduction, advantages, disadvantages and conclusion, and ensure each linking expression introduces a complete, connected idea.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses some task-relevant vocabulary, including “preschooling,” “early literacy,” “numeracy,” and “recognize,” and the examples of numbers, shapes and colours make the topic clear. However, the range is narrow because the response is very short, and several spelling errors reduce accuracy: “modren,” “partents,” “thier,” “aguably,” “numbracy” and “significiant.” Some phrasing is also imprecise or unnatural, such as “in very low age” and “send their kids for preschooling.” Aim for accurate spelling and more natural collocations, such as “at a young age” and “enrol their children in preschool.” Developing both sides of the topic would also give you opportunities to use a broader range of relevant vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts a few different sentence patterns, including a contrast between parents who choose preschool and those who wait, and a sentence explaining what children learn. The basic meaning is generally understandable. However, grammatical control is uneven: “other wait” needs a plural subject and verb (“others wait”), while “children ready to go” needs a linking verb (“children are ready”). The opening sentence also lacks clear punctuation between its clauses, and the final “Moreover” leaves the sentence unfinished. Capitalisation and spacing around punctuation are inconsistent. Practise complete sentences with accurate subject–verb agreement, articles and linking verbs, then proofread punctuation. Adding a range of complete complex sentences would help express and support the ideas more clearly.
