In modern times, the issue of sugar has become highly controversial. There are those who say that many manufactured food and drink products contain high levels of sugar, which causes many health problems. Sugary products should be made more expensive to encourage individuals to consume less sugar. From my perspective, I largely agree with sugary products should be made more expensive to encourage people to consume less sugar and this essay will explain why.
The primary reason for my agreement is that people face health problems, because sugar is very dangerous. When some people eat a lot of sugar, they can develop diseases like diabetes. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by stating a position, but the development is significantly underdeveloped. The ideas are repetitive, and the essay fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, which negatively impacts the depth of the argument. The points made regarding health issues and the impact of price increases are simplistic and lack supporting evidence or logical expansion. To improve, you must provide more detailed explanations and specific examples to support your viewpoint, ensuring you meet the length requirement to allow for a full exploration of the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is weak. There is excessive repetition of the prompt's phrasing, which makes the writing feel mechanical. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often inaccurate or forced, such as 'Because of which' used at the start of sentences. The logical flow is hindered by these repetitive structures and the lack of clear transitions between arguments. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each sentence builds upon the previous one rather than restating the same point.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. You frequently reuse the same phrases from the prompt, such as 'manufactured food and drink products' and 'encourage people to consume less sugar'. There is little evidence of a range of vocabulary, and some word choices are awkward or incorrect, such as 'they cannot be given' and 'people can solved her problem'. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use synonyms and more precise academic vocabulary to express your ideas, avoiding the direct copying of the task instructions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response relies heavily on simple sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('they can given'), tense usage, and sentence fragments. The misuse of 'because of which' as a sentence starter is a recurring error that impacts clarity. While the meaning is generally understandable, the lack of complex structures and the high frequency of errors prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Focus on mastering basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors like verb forms and pluralisation.
