Student answer (Band 6.5)

Food is a basic human necessity. It provides energy required for everyday tasks, and consists of many ingredients one of which is sugar. In modern times, many consumable products have flooded the market which contains a high concentration of sugar which badly effect the health. I strongly agree with making sugary products more expensive to encourage people to consume less sugar.

Sugar is required by body but in a limited amount, which rise of different beverages and fast foods, the sugar intake of a average person has increased dramatically, this has given rise to a variety of health challenges like diabetes and obesity most notably. There is also a misconception that, only sweet products have sugars, but in reality almost every thing has some sort of sugar in it, for instance bread, bun etc are have sugar in them.

Number of different products like bakery items, beverages etc, alone contain same amount of sugars which our body required in a single day, so a person who consumes more of similar types of products is more prone to getting health problems like diabetes or are at risk of becoming overweight. High sugar products have a kind of addiction to them where consumed once, the body does want to consume them again. One of major cause of high sugar intake is that these products are cheap as compared healthy counter options and as such people tend to by more of these products.

In conclusion, these products should be more expensive and strict guidelines must be implemented to control sugar contents in these products and promote healthier options.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You have identified the core issue—the health impact of sugar—and supported the proposal to increase prices. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention that sugary products are addictive and cheaper than healthy alternatives, these points could be expanded with more specific examples or a deeper explanation of how price elasticity might actually influence consumer behavior. The conclusion is a bit abrupt and introduces new ideas (strict guidelines) that were not previously discussed in the body paragraphs. To reach a higher band, ensure that each body paragraph fully explores the implications of your arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a central theme. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. You rely on basic transitions, and some sentences feel disconnected, such as the transition between the health risks of sugar and the misconception about hidden sugars. The use of cohesive devices is sometimes repetitive or slightly inaccurate, such as 'Number of different products' at the start of the third paragraph, which is not a standard way to introduce a point. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence flows naturally into the next would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'necessity,' 'concentration,' and 'addiction.' However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'badly effect the health' (should be 'badly affect'), 'rise of different beverages' (should be 'rise in'), and 'counter options' (should be 'alternatives'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your argument. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and ensuring that you use words in their correct grammatical form.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and article usage (e.g., 'sugar is required by body,' 'a average person,' 'are have sugar'). Additionally, there are punctuation issues, such as comma splices in the second paragraph. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for small grammatical slips will help you achieve a higher score.
