Student answer (Band 7.5)

Manufactured drinks have high sugar content leading to severe health complications such as obesity and diabetes. In my opinion, I believe that making such products expensive will encourage people to consume sugar in less quantity; however, there should be additional awareness campaigns being conducted side-by-side, starting from schools for a long term impact.

The primary driver behind people's purchasing decision is the price of any items. In the present, manufactured food and beverages that are being produced in large scale often have lower costs as opposed to healthier alternatives. This attracts consumers into buying such stuffs despite health risks. For example, in Hong Kong, a bottle of fresh juice is around 55 dollars, while a can of coke is just around 8 dollars. However, by making those expensive, people will have a second-thought before purchasing such products, leading to a slower demand than before.

Despite that, if people are not made aware, then the situation is more likely to be same as before. When the harms of sugary products are taught from the school-level, it will be instilled in brain for a longer time and will help in formation of good eating habits. For example, a study reported that with 'junk food and cavity' campaigns being conducted in a city in Nepal, the number of cavity cases were on a declining trend. Furthermore, as people become more aware of their health, industries manufacturing such sugar products will necessarily be forced to make a shift towards healthier alternatives.

To sum up, increasing the cost of a product is likely the most effective decision to discourage consumers from buying it. I agree with the idea that such items with high additive sugar should be made expensive, but awareness campaigns must also go hand-in-hand to make the plan more effective in practice.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have addressed all parts of the prompt, clearly stating your position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout the essay. Your ideas are relevant and well-supported with examples, such as the price comparison in Hong Kong and the health campaign in Nepal. The argument is balanced by acknowledging the necessity of awareness campaigns alongside price hikes. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting examples are fully integrated into the argument; for instance, you could further explain how the price difference specifically influences consumer behavior in the long term. Overall, the response is well-developed and directly answers the question.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use cohesive devices such as 'however,' 'furthermore,' and 'to sum up' to link your points effectively. The transition between the economic argument and the educational argument is smooth. To improve, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, in the second paragraph, 'those' refers back to 'manufactured food and beverages,' which is clear, but ensure that all pronouns have unambiguous antecedents. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'severe health complications,' 'long term impact,' and 'declining trend' are used effectively. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'buying such stuffs' (informal) and 'instilled in brain' (should be 'instilled in the mind'). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, some collocations could be more natural. Expanding your range to include more academic synonyms for common words would help elevate your score. Overall, your vocabulary is adequate and allows for clear communication of your ideas.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'if people are not made aware, then the situation is more likely to be same as before.' While there are occasional errors—such as 'the situation is more likely to be same' (missing 'the') and 'in less quantity' (should be 'in smaller quantities')—these do not impede communication. Your control over punctuation and sentence boundaries is generally good. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as passive voice constructions or inverted conditionals, while maintaining the high level of accuracy you currently display.
