Student answer (Band 7.0)

In the modern lifestyle, there is a concerning increase in use of sugary products including ever day drinks and eatables. The consumption of too much sugar is detrimental to health and is cause of many diseases. In order to control the overuse of sugary products many suggest that such products should be made least accessible by increasing the prices. I completely agree because this limits the reach of people and puts pressure on industry to switch to healthy alternatives.

One of the major reasons of consumption of sugary food is that it is readily available in markets and are at cheaper prices. People are attracted towards things which are easy to consume and are affordable. For example, after a tiring day a cheap box of juice seems to be the best way to revitalize oneself. Firstly, it is cheap to buy secondly it is convenient to consume. Therefore, increasing prices may cause in hesitation in people to buy such harmful products.

Manufacturers for their fiscal interest do mass production of sugary products and supply in market with tempting labels. Increase in prices will decrease the demand of such products that will eventually put pressure on industries to produce healthy alternatives. A good example is set by government of UAE by increasing the tax on sugary products manufacturing which has limited both the producers and the consumers.

In conclusion, there is a strong need to control the production and consumption of sugary products. This can be achieved by raising prices which will discourage buyers and in return motivates industries to come up with healthy alternatives.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments regarding the accessibility of sugary products and the potential for industry shifts are relevant and logically developed. The inclusion of the UAE example provides a concrete illustration of the argument, which strengthens the response. While the ideas are well-supported, the development could be slightly more nuanced to reach a higher band; for instance, discussing potential counter-arguments or the social impact of such taxes would add depth. Overall, the response is focused and directly answers the question asked.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'In order to', 'Therefore', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to link ideas. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the use of referencing could be more varied to improve the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure supports the argument well, ensuring the reader can follow the writer's line of reasoning without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'revitalize' and 'fiscal interest', which demonstrate a reasonable range. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'ever day drinks and eatables' (everyday drinks and food items) and 'cause of many diseases' (a cause of). To improve, the writer should focus on more precise collocations and avoid slightly unnatural phrasing. The range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without significant strain.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is consistently clear, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('in market', 'by government of UAE') and minor subject-verb agreement issues ('are at cheaper prices'). Punctuation is generally functional, though some sentences could be refined for better flow. The writer demonstrates a good grasp of basic grammar, but the frequency of minor errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring accuracy would be the next step for improvement.
