Student answer (Band 6.5)

The fabricated food and drinks are having high amount of sugar which are leading people to various health issues therefore they should be high price so it will make people re-think about there actions, yes i agree with this because by making it expensive people wont buy it in large amounts and they will try to change their diet.

Being expensive will cause people to buy less, if the costs are high people will only buy what they require rather then buying in surplus.

For example, in India when people go to a cinema they will buy popcorn, one of the popular flavour is caramel, therefore it was most bought, recently India imposed taxes on caramel popcorn, which affected the sales of it.

People will try to find alternative food, most people can not afford costly food so they will try to look for different diet options, in search new food options they might find healthy food which might have less sugar in them. therefore through this they might avoid health issues which are caused by sugar.

For example, In my b.tech collage we have a huge restaurant in the beginning the prices were cheap so most of the students used to eat in restaurant rather in the collage dinner section, but after 2 years they increased the prices in the restaurant which made our students to eat daily in dinner section.

Most of the restaurant menu was processed food so it was quite unhealthy, so by the collage choice led to students into a healthy diet.

in conclusion, the processed food and drinks are unhealthy because they contain high amounts of sugars so by increasing the prices we can prevent them people to avoid these foods and drinks, i agree with this because it will make people to buy food which they only need and it will make people to look for alternative food sources

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of increasing taxes on sugary products. The ideas are relevant, such as the economic impact on consumer behavior and the potential shift toward healthier alternatives. However, the development is somewhat limited. The examples provided, such as the cinema popcorn tax and the university cafeteria pricing, are personal and anecdotal rather than fully developed arguments. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the broader societal implications of such policies, such as the impact on public health budgets or the potential for social inequality, rather than relying solely on personal observations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of your argument. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or repetitive. For instance, you frequently use 'therefore' and 'so' to link ideas, which makes the flow feel somewhat simplistic. Additionally, some transitions between sentences are abrupt, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the second paragraph where the connection between the cinema example and the broader argument could be more explicitly stated. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. You rely on basic terms like 'high amount', 'costly', and 'huge', which are functional but not sophisticated. There are also some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'fabricated food' (processed food is more accurate) and 'collage' (likely meaning college). To improve, you should aim to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to economics and health, such as 'fiscal policy', 'disincentivize', 'nutritional value', or 'socio-economic impact'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The fabricated food and drinks are having'), punctuation errors (missing commas and run-on sentences), and incorrect preposition usage. For example, 'made our students to eat' should be 'encouraged our students to eat'. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on sentence boundaries and consistent verb tense usage would be a significant improvement.
