Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many processed food and beverage products contain excessive amounts of sugar, which can lead to various health problems. It is argued that increasing the prices of sugary products could encourage people to reduce their sugar consumption. I do not fully agree with this viewpoint. In the subsequent paragraphs, I will discuss this.

One of the foremost points is to generate awareness among people. If they are aware of the possible consequences of eating junk food it would not only be beneficial for them, but also prevent them from several health problems such as obesity, heart disease, diabetes and cardiovascular disorders. To exemplify this, a person who consume sugar-rich foods and drinks for a long time, develops various health problems and may struggle to remain focused and active. For this purpose, social awareness campaigns should be initiated to educate people about the adverse effects of excessive sugar consumption.

In addition to this, healthier alternatives should be made more accessible and appealing to consumers. Businesses and several food chains are now promoting gluten free products. For example, The brands named as Beyond Snack and The Healthy Binge promoting healthier, low-sugar and minimally processed alternatives snacks, are now available all over India. Furthermore, Nowadays, street food market trend is switching to healthier food, especially in metropolitan cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata. People are more focused on staying active by following regular walk, exercise and consuming a balanced diet. Therefore, the growing availability of healthier food options can encourage consumers to replace sugary and highly processed products with more nutritious alternatives, ultimately helping to reduce sugar consumption and improve overall health.

In conclusion, although increasing the price of sugary products may discourage people from consuming excessive amounts of sugar, I believe that raising public awareness and promoting healthier alternatives would be more effective. These measures can help individuals make informed dietary choices and reduce the risk of health problems associated with excessive sugar consumption.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position of partial disagreement. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as the mention of specific Indian snack brands and the shift in street food trends. However, the development is slightly uneven; while the argument for awareness is clear, the connection between the examples of 'gluten-free' products and the specific issue of sugar reduction could be more explicitly linked to the prompt's core argument. Overall, the position is well-maintained throughout the essay, and the response provides a balanced view by acknowledging the opposing argument before presenting alternatives.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition to this', 'To exemplify this', and 'Therefore' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. While some transitions are standard, they function well to maintain the flow of the argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, contributing to the overall coherence of the piece.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. The student uses topic-specific terms such as 'cardiovascular disorders', 'nutritious alternatives', and 'excessive sugar consumption' effectively. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'The brands named as Beyond Snack... promoting' which is slightly clunky, and 'following regular walk', which should be 'taking regular walks'. However, these errors do not impede communication, and the range of vocabulary is adequate to convey complex ideas clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several error-free sentences, and the grammar is generally controlled. However, there are some recurring minor errors, such as 'a person who consume' (subject-verb agreement) and 'prevent them from several health problems' (preposition usage). Additionally, 'Nowadays, street food market trend is switching' lacks a proper article. Despite these occasional slips, the meaning is always clear, and the grammatical errors do not significantly hinder the reader's understanding of the argument.
