Student answer (Band 6.0)

It has been observed that several manufacturing companies make food and drink products with high levels of sugar, which can lead to various health problems. Therefore, sugary products should be made more expensive to encourage people to reduce their sugar consumption. I completely agree with this view because it can improve public health and encourage food companies to produce healthier products.

The foremost reason is that it improves public health. When people consume products, which has high levels of sugar, it may cause obesity, diabetes, and tooth decay. Individuals should put restrictions on their consumption of sugar-related products and monitor how much sugar they consume for their health. Moreover, higher price of sugary products reduce consumption of people. If sugar products price increases, many people try to avoid it. As people spend a large amount of money on unhealthy products, they may choose healthier alternatives, which can help them stay fit and healthy.

Apart from this, consuming healthy food can reduce healthcare costs. When people develop healthy eating habits in their life, they become fitter and more active. As a result, people are less likely to become ill, which can reduce pressure on healthcare services. Additionally, it encourages food manufacturers to make healthier products. A high price or tax on sugar-related products could encourage producers to reduce the amount of sugar in their products. Therefore, companies may develop alternatives to remain competitive in the market with better quality products.

In conclusion, many manufactured food and drink products contain high sugar in their products, which leads to health concerns. So, government should increase their price on them to encourage people to use less sugar in their eating habit. I agree with this point as it may improve public health and reduce healthcare costs.

Overall6.0

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have clearly addressed all parts of the prompt, taking a firm position in favor of increasing prices on sugary products. Your ideas are relevant and logically extended, particularly regarding the dual benefits of improved public health and the incentive for manufacturers to reformulate products. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting arguments are slightly more nuanced; for example, you could briefly acknowledge potential counter-arguments, such as the impact on low-income families, before refuting them. This would demonstrate a more sophisticated level of task development.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'The foremost reason', 'Moreover', 'Apart from this', and 'Additionally' to guide the reader through your arguments. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the progression of ideas within paragraphs is smoother. For instance, the transition between discussing individual health and the economic impact on healthcare services could be more tightly integrated to improve the flow of your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'obesity', 'diabetes', 'tooth decay', and 'reformulate' (implied). However, there is some repetition of basic words like 'products' and 'sugar'. To achieve a higher score, aim to use more precise synonyms or collocations. For example, instead of repeating 'sugary products', you could use 'sugar-laden items', 'processed goods', or 'sweetened beverages'. Additionally, ensure accurate word choice, as in the phrase 'put restrictions on their consumption', which could be more naturally expressed as 'limit their intake'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. However, there are several recurring grammatical errors that affect accuracy. For example, 'products, which has high levels' should be 'products, which have high levels' (subject-verb agreement). Similarly, 'higher price of sugary products reduce' should be 'higher prices... reduce'. There are also minor issues with articles and pluralization, such as 'government should increase their price' (should be 'the government'). Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will significantly improve your clarity and accuracy.
