Student answer (Band 6.0)

High levels of sugar is contained in majority of processed foods and drinks which can be harmful for overall health if consumed in large amount. That being said, it is believed that to discourage people from buying sugary foods, there should be an increase in their price. I partially agree with this statement, but it is also a main source of food for many people all over the world and therefore to lessen the sugar consumption we should lessen the price of another alternative choices of healthier food.

On the one hand, increasing the price of foods and drinks which contains excessive amount of sugar is beneficial for preventing people from buying those. Because sugary drinks and foods are relatively cheap compared to other kinds of foods. For instance, cola, sprite and fanta which estimated to have 10 gram of sugar per 100mil and this costs about 1 dollars to 3 dollars at most depending on the country. Whereas, pure orange juice or apple juice has less sugar and costs over 7 dollars. Similarly, in foods, breakfast cereals or other kinds of processed food are relatively cheaper than real food which contains meat and vegetables. From this examples, it is clear that for most people, considering the price manufactured food and drink are better choice. Therefore, lowering their price could prevent them buying.

On the other hand, to solve this problem completely we should offer people more healthier food choices at cheaper prices. Because of setting healthier food and drinks at a high price, people who are not well-off usually avoid buying them. Therefore, by offering people healthy food and drinks at a reasonable price could lessen the number of people consuming manufactured food.

In conclusion, by increasing price for processed food and drink, can be beneficial for having less buyers, buy it could have detrimental affect on people who are not wealthy. Therefore, we should also lower the healthy food sections so that everyone can afford.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You successfully argue for a balanced approach, acknowledging the benefits of a sugar tax while highlighting the socio-economic necessity of subsidizing healthy alternatives. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the price comparison between sugary drinks and fresh juice. However, some arguments could be more thoroughly developed; for instance, the link between price and consumption is stated but could be supported with more nuanced reasoning regarding consumer behavior. Overall, the response is focused and directly answers the question.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two sides of the argument. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Therefore' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are instances where referencing is a bit unclear, such as in the final paragraph where 'buy it could have' appears to be a typo for 'but it could have'. Despite these minor issues, the progression of ideas is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'detrimental affect', 'processed foods', and 'well-off'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'lessen the price of another alternative choices' (should be 'lower the price of alternative choices') and 'detrimental affect' (should be 'detrimental effect'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations to reach a higher band. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('High levels of sugar is contained' should be 'are contained') and awkward phrasing ('From this examples' should be 'From these examples'). Additionally, some sentences are fragmented or lack proper punctuation, such as the final sentence of the first paragraph. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of your main points. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and plural forms.
