Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many food and drink products contain high level of sugar, which leads to several health problem. Some people argue that sugary products should be made more expensive to motivate people to buy less sugary products. I strongly agree with this statement because increasing the prices of the sugary product can really help people to not buy it. It will be really beneficial to the individuals as well as the government.

firstly, increasing the price of the sugary product can discourage people to buy it in regular term. Many people, specially the young ones are really attracted to inexpensive sugary food and products. If these product became more expensive then it might prevent from people to buy it in daily basis. For example, now a days the products are so cheap that the children can buy it from their own pocket money, so if the government increases the price then they might not be able to purchase them or they can also switch to other healthier option even if it is just a water.

Secondly, increasing the tax or price can make the people choose the healthier option or healthier eating habit. Also, the increasing prices and the decreasing buyers can encourage the company and the producers to make the products less sugary. For example, after increasing the price of those products the buyers will definitely decreases in certain amount and the less buyers will motivate the producer to lunch the healthier option or re-make the products with less chemicals and sugars. This could reduce the chance of many health problem and obesity. Also the government can use the tax collected from sugary to start new health program to motivate and influence healthy life style.

In conclusion, i strongly agree with this statement. It may not solve all the health problem but can decrease the risk. It will discourage people to buy the junks and switch to the healthier option.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments regarding consumer behavior and producer incentives are relevant and logically extended. However, the development is somewhat repetitive, and the ideas could be more nuanced. For instance, the discussion on government intervention is a strong point, but it lacks specific examples of existing policies or broader economic implications. The response is well-focused on the topic, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the writer's stance. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph introduces a distinct, fully explored idea rather than restating the same point in different ways.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'firstly', 'secondly', and 'in conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'the products' or 'those products' without specific antecedents. The flow between sentences is generally smooth, but the transition between the impact on consumers and the impact on producers could be more sophisticated. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'incentivize' or 'healthier options', but the range is somewhat limited. Some word choices are repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'sugary products' and 'people'. There are also minor errors in word formation and collocation, such as 'in regular term' (should be 'on a regular basis') and 'lunch the healthier option' (should be 'launch'). Expanding the range of synonyms and collocations would improve the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with pluralization ('health problem' instead of 'health problems') and article usage ('the water' instead of 'water'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'it might prevent from people to buy it'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. Increasing the variety of complex structures and proofreading for subject-verb agreement and pluralization would be beneficial.
