Student answer (Band 6.0)

The packaged foods that we consume are high in sugars which leads to people getting dangerous health issues. Some people argue that sugary products should be sold at a high price to motivate people on consuming less sugar. I strongly agree with this development. Extreme amounts of sugar consumption will cause various health problems. If these manufactured food and drink products are sold at a high price people will begin to ignore them and choose healthy alternatives.

Packaged food and drinks contain high sugars that will spike insuline and lead to insuline resistance. Insuline resistance will cause obesity and decrease the metabolic function of a body. Moreover, obesity is like a stepping stone to all major health issues. For example, India is called as a home for Diabetes as majority of the people suffer from insuline resistance, obesity and fatty liver.

Making these products expensive and selling them at a high price will motivate people on consuming less sugar. Meanwhile, people start searching for healthy alternatives. This will benefit them to opt for a healthy lifestyle. For example, now-a-days people stopped using sugar and switched to monk fruit sweetners and stevia as they are cheaper and have no calories in it.

In conclusion, I firlmy believe that selling manufactured food and drink products at a high price will bring a huge change to the society. This development will motivate people to concentrate more on their health and opt for a healthier lifestyle and reduce the chance of people getting diabetes and fatty livers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing reasons and examples to support your argument. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument that people will simply 'ignore' expensive products is a bit simplistic; you could have strengthened this by discussing the socio-economic impact or the effectiveness of such taxes in other countries. The examples provided, such as the mention of India and specific sweeteners, are relevant but could be integrated more smoothly to demonstrate a deeper analysis of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'Moreover' and 'In conclusion' are used correctly, but the transition between sentences within paragraphs could be more fluid. For example, the link between insulin resistance and the example of India is a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'this development') is always precise will help you achieve a higher band score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'metabolic function', 'insulin resistance', and 'sweeteners'. However, there are some spelling errors, such as 'insuline' (insulin), 'firlmy' (firmly), and 'sweetners' (sweeteners). Additionally, some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'called as a home for Diabetes' or 'benefit them to opt for'. To improve, focus on mastering the spelling of technical terms and refining your collocations. Using more sophisticated synonyms for common words like 'high price' (e.g., 'fiscal measures' or 'levies') would also enhance your lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'motivate people on consuming' (should be 'to consume'), 'a body' (should be 'the body'), and 'now-a-days' (should be 'nowadays'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. You should focus on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage. Attempting more varied complex structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice constructions, while ensuring accuracy, will help you demonstrate better control over your grammar.
