Student answer (Band 5.0)

Many countries nowadays are popular for their foods which includes junk foods and sugar food products. Some people believe that by making sugary products expensive, peope consumes it less which is very disagreeing. I will discuss why this statement is negative in this essay.

Firstly, it totally depends on people that how much amount of sweet products they have to consume. If people want to make their life healthy they should take less amount of sugars in their food by themselves. It causes many severe health conditions so people should understand that taking less amout of sugary products can beneficial to them only, they have to protect their health.

People cannot blame anyone for their health issues like they cannot blame the government that because of them we are in bad health situations. It is a common sense that if this type of food and drink products cause many health problems, then they should consume it in less amount. By making this products more expensive cannot affect people which are addicted to the sugary products. They are still going to buy that products even if it becomes more expensive.

In conclusion, I would like to say that, people should understand that they only have to take care of their own health, by increasing or decreasing amount of this products cannot affect their health, it is the quantity how much they are consuming in their daily lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position against the proposed tax. However, the development of ideas is limited and repetitive. The argument relies heavily on the concept of 'personal responsibility' without exploring the broader economic or public health implications suggested by the task. Furthermore, the essay fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, which significantly impacts the depth of the response. To improve, you should expand on your arguments with specific examples or counter-arguments to provide a more balanced and thorough discussion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the basic structure. However, the progression of ideas is somewhat mechanical. While cohesive devices like 'Firstly' and 'In conclusion' are used, the internal links between sentences are often weak or repetitive. For instance, the transition between the idea of personal choice and the argument about addiction is abrupt. Improving the use of referencing (e.g., using 'these products' instead of repeating 'this products') and varying your linking words would help create a smoother flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for basic communication but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There is frequent repetition of basic terms such as 'products', 'health', and 'people'. Additionally, there are errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'sugar food products' instead of 'sugary food products' and 'very disagreeing' which is not a natural way to express a strong disagreement. To improve, focus on learning collocations and using more precise synonyms to avoid repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'peope consumes it'), incorrect pluralisation (e.g., 'this products'), and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'by increasing or decreasing amount of this products cannot affect their health'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence construction often feels fragmented. Focusing on basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring subject-verb agreement will help improve your score.
