Student answer (Band 7.0)

A significant amount of produced food and beverages contain lots of unhealthy sugar. Some believe that the cost of these products should increase to benefit the public's health. I agree with the latter because sugar can cause severe diabetes and is marketed mostly for children.

After consuming excessive amounts of sugar, a person can develop diabetes. This is a disease, where the human's body is unable to produce sufficient levels of insulin to accommodate for consumed sugars. While we can treat this somewhat by injecting insulin with epipens, the consequences are more severe in the long-term. Recent studies by the University of Heidelberg in Germany show that diabetes causes dementia, blindness and other major diseases. Therefore, I think we should limit the availability of sugar to limit the risks of people developing diabetes and their health suffering drastically.

Furthermore, most of high-sugary products are advertised mostly for children. Children are highly incentivised to consume all sweet foods, especially if they are rather cheap. If goods containing sugar were more expensive, children would not be able to buy these without the supervision of their parents. At such an early in stage in their life, it is essential for children to develop correctly and healthy. For example, studies from Indonesia have shown that children who consume fewer sugars perform 13 % better cognitively, than children mainly consuming these. Hence, we should increase the price for soft-drinks and sweets to protect the future youth.

In conclusion, on a nutritional level sugar is a risk for human's well-being. For this reason, I agree that we should make products containing high levels of sugar more costly to reduce not only the risk of diabetes in society, but also protect our children's health.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas are relevant, particularly the focus on health consequences and the impact on children. The arguments are extended with supporting examples, such as the reference to the University of Heidelberg and the study from Indonesia. While the development is logical, the explanation of the economic mechanism (how price increases specifically reduce consumption) could be slightly more nuanced to reach a higher band. Overall, the response is well-focused and directly answers the question posed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the health argument and the social argument is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Therefore', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. While the flow is generally good, some of the referencing could be slightly more sophisticated to avoid minor repetition, but the overall structure is clear and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'excessive amounts', 'accommodate for', and 'perform cognitively' show an attempt to use more academic language. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice or collocation, such as 'high-sugary products' (should be 'high-sugar products') and 'at such an early in stage' (grammatical error affecting lexical flow). Despite these occasional slips, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication of complex ideas.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a good attempt at using complex forms, such as conditional sentences ('If goods containing sugar were more expensive, children would not be able to buy these...') and relative clauses. However, there are persistent minor errors, such as 'human's body' (should be 'the human body'), '13 % better cognitively, than' (unnecessary comma), and 'develop correctly and healthy' (should be 'correctly and healthily'). These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the essay from reaching the higher bands where error-free sentences are the majority.
