Student answer (Band 6.0)

I assume that chocolates and sugary products are the most loved food items for most of the people. A large proportion of people's food item can be a sweet dishes or chocolates. And to reach the expectations of everyone, many companies tend to add excess amount of sugar, to make their product sweeter. But these manufacturers ignore the normal range of adding sugar and instead of maintaining the normal level of sugar, they add more sugar in the products.

Many manufactured food and drink products contain high levels of sugar, which causes many health problems. Companies do this in order to increase the sales of their products, to compete with other products in the market or to make food more delicious. But at the end, it may lead to various health issues like, diabetes, lethargy, drowsiness, obesity, tooth decay, abnormal cravings and etc.

But I do not consider that sugary products should be made more expensive to encourage people to consume less sugar as this is a complete pseudo solution. This will only lead to increase the profit of manufacturers.

For example, people can buy costly items if they want to, rich people will still have access to buy them and someone who is unable to buy it does not mean that they are consuming less sugar as they will find alternatives of the expensive items.

Rather than doing this, we should encourage people to eat healthy food, do some exercises, maintain their calorie intake and create awarness to general public through various schemes to teach the impacts of eating high sugary food.

In conclusion, its better to let the people adapt healthy eating habits rather than making products more expensive

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have clearly stated your position against the proposal and maintained it throughout the essay. You addressed the prompt by discussing the health implications of sugar and providing a counter-argument to the proposed tax. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, your argument that 'rich people will still have access' is a valid point, but it could be extended with more depth regarding the economic impact on lower-income households. The essay covers all parts of the task, but the supporting arguments remain at a somewhat superficial level, which prevents it from reaching a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'For example' and 'In conclusion', to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel abrupt. For example, the shift between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother to better connect the problem (health issues) to your specific disagreement with the proposed solution. Referencing is generally clear, but the overall progression of ideas could be more sophisticated to achieve a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your ideas clearly. You use some relevant topic-specific terms like 'lethargy', 'obesity', and 'calorie intake'. However, the range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. There are instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'a complete pseudo solution' and 'create awarness to general public'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and a wider variety of academic vocabulary to express your arguments with more nuance and sophistication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'a large proportion of people's food item can be a sweet dishes' (subject-verb agreement) and 'lead to increase the profit' (should be 'lead to an increase in'). Punctuation is mostly functional, but there are minor errors, such as the unnecessary use of 'and etc.' at the end of a list. These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score.
