Student answer (Band 6.0)

Most of the manufactured food and drink products have high levels of sugar which is causing serious health problems. I strongly agree that sugar products should be made more expensive to encourage people to consume less sugar.

Products containing high levels of sugar should not be consumed on daily basis because these products are causing serious health problems in all ages of people. One of the major health problems caused by high levels of sugar is the diabetes in which insulin is not produced by our body to control the sugar level in our blood. Diabetes is getting more common nowadays because these kinds of products are cheaper and readily available in markets. Although, high level of sugar products is harmful for health, they are cheaper and people can afford them. In order to encourage people to consume less sugar, these kind of food and drinks should be made more expensive so that a smaller number of people are interested in buying them. For instance, Pakistan is having leading number of patients of diabetes around the world it is because the products are very cheap and people are buying them without worrying about their health. Children are drinking and eating food with high levels of sugars. To prevent this situation getting more worse the government or the regulatory body should make these products more expensive.

In conclusion, I agree that it is more appropriate to made these products more expensive so that people would consume less sugar. World health organization should also direct the regulatory authorities to implement rules and regulations about the availability and the price of these products to ensure a safe and healthy life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The argument is supported by a relevant example regarding diabetes in Pakistan, which helps to illustrate the point about affordability and health outcomes. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive; for instance, the point about products being 'cheaper' is mentioned multiple times without adding new depth. To reach a higher band, you should aim to explore the counter-arguments or the potential socio-economic implications of such a tax more thoroughly, rather than restating the initial premise.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, and there is a progression of ideas from the problem to the proposed solution. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In order to', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the use of referencing could be more varied. For example, the phrase 'these kind of food and drinks' is used repeatedly, which makes the flow feel a bit repetitive. Improving the variety of linking words and pronouns would enhance the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their opinion clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'regulatory body' and 'implement rules'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'all ages of people' (should be 'people of all ages') and 'getting more worse' (a redundant comparative). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing. The range is sufficient for the task but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. Examples include 'it is more appropriate to made' (should be 'to make'), 'Pakistan is having leading number' (should be 'has the leading number'), and 'the diabetes' (unnecessary article). These errors do not impede communication, but they demonstrate a lack of consistent control over complex structures. Increasing the variety of sentence types and proofreading for basic verb form errors would significantly improve the score.
