Student answer (Band 7.0)
Many processed food and beverages consume high level of sugar which can lead to serious health problems. I strongly agree that sugary products should be made more expensive, as higher prices can discourage excessive consumption and encourage people to make healthier choices.
The main reason why I support this reason is that excessive sugar consumption can have serious consequences for people's health.
High sugar intake can result in obesity, increased risk type of 2 diabetes and toot decay. These problem can place pressure on healthcare system. For instance, People who regularly consume sugary drinks and processed foods are more likely to develop weight-related and other health problems.
Increasing the price of sugary products could be an effective way to reduce their consumption and encourage healthier eating habits. When sugary drinks and snacks become more expensive, people may be less willing to purchase them regularly, particularly those who consume these products on a daily basis. Instead, they may choose more affordable and nutritious alternatives, such as water, fresh fruit or unsweetened beverages. This change in purchasing behavior could gradually lead to healthier dietary habits, as individuals may become accustomed to consuming less sugar over time. Furthermore, reducing sugar consumption across the population could lower the number of people suffering from obesity, diabetes and other diet-related illnesses. This would not only improve people's quality of life but could also reduce the pressure placed on public healthcare systems. For example, if the price of sugary soft drinks increased significantly, consumers might be more likely to choose water or other low-sugar beverages, thereby reducing their daily sugar intake.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that sugary products should be made more expensive, as this can reduce sugar consumption and encourage people to make healthier choices.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas are relevant and logically extended, particularly regarding the health benefits and the economic mechanism of price increases. The argument is well-supported with examples, such as the mention of obesity and diabetes, and the potential shift toward healthier alternatives like water. The response is fully developed and meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the health consequences and the proposed solution is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'For instance', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion, ensuring the structure remains clear and easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is sufficient and generally precise, allowing for a clear expression of ideas. The student uses relevant topic-specific terms such as 'excessive consumption', 'purchasing behavior', and 'diet-related illnesses'. While the range is adequate for the task, it lacks a high degree of sophistication or idiomatic usage that would characterize a higher band. There are minor errors in word choice, such as 'consume high level of sugar' instead of 'contain high levels of sugar', but these do not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there is good control, there are some noticeable errors, such as 'Many processed food and beverages consume high level of sugar' (should be 'contain') and 'increased risk type of 2 diabetes' (should be 'risk of type 2 diabetes'). Additionally, 'These problem' should be pluralized to 'These problems'. Despite these occasional slips, the meaning is always clear, and the grammatical errors do not interfere with the reader's understanding of the argument.
